Vacuum Tubes may have been a cornerstone in developing electronics, but for our purposes here, they make a sweet chess board. The “Chess Set For Tesla,” by Paul Fryer, uses 32 vacuum tubes and 64 plugs to ensure that those pieces don’t tip over during play. And of course, they light up, sohwing the type of piece on top. As some Dvice commenters noted, this is probably an impractical board, as the tubes would likely get too hot to handle unless you’re playing in the northern reaches of Russia. That doesn’t make it any less awesome from afar. • How Italians Do “Barbecu”

Southern Americans will tell you that the word “Barbecue” should never be used as a verb. What will they say about dropping the final “e” for a bit of European flare? Italian designer Piero Lissoni’s “Barbecu” does just that, with both a gas igniter and the ability to make any Southerner proud with charcoal. Best of all, a set of work tops accomodates all sorts of outdoor occassions, from the straightforward pit to the tabletop grill to the tall, rolling cart. There’s no assembly required, either. Look for the Barbecu at Panik-Design, via Alessi, in a matter of days. [ href="http://www.gearcrave.com/wp-admin/post-new.php">Panik-Design]

Each set includes one Autobot logo and one Decepticon emblem, and they’re both crafted with silver plating, measuring 0.78 inches by 0.59 inches. A black, PVC-covered cufflink box is also included. Not a bad deal at $20 bucks plus shipping, but there’s a problem. Like any Etsy offering that hits the blogosphere, Finkstudio couldn’t keep up with demand, so these awesome ‘links are sold out. At 31 inches by 62 inches, the Football carpet isn’t fit for staging any actual matches, but think of all the happy feelings you’ll get when walking through the door, if you’re a Soccer fan, that is. Designer Karin Mannerstål has created an approximation of a footie field with 100 percent, hand-tufted wool. Admittedly, we’re not familiar with the benefits of hand-tufting, but hopefully stepping on this carpet feels something like running around on fresh grass, fielding a header into the net and filling out your sails with the delighted screams of fans. It’s available in one color — green, of course — and sells for $190.43. Angry hooligans on the sidelines not included. [ href="http://www.scandinaviandesigncenter.com/Products/usd0/Trademark/New+products/10238/Football+carpet&currencychanged=1">ScandinavianDesignCenter via href="http://coolmaterial.com/home/football-ru/">Cool Material]

style="text-align: left;">It’s not what you think, really. With the help of Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax, brothers Sean and Benjamin Anderson have created a series of multicolored sculptures constructed entirely of surfing wax. The two bros (or is that “brahs?”) are avid surfers and were “very excited to merge an icon of surf culture with the contemporary art world … and make it smell good.” As for the Sex Wax, Mr. Zog’s surf company is steps away from the Anderson brothers’ studio in Carpinteria, Calif. — a respectable spot for catching waves, we understand. The skulls will be on display at href="http://www.independent.com/news/2009/jun/21/rogue-wave-open-anderson-art-collective">Rogue Wave, a surf art show scheduled for tomorrow, if you’re in the area. Otherwise, all seven of them are up for purchase through info@andersonARTcollective.com. Because nothing says “sexy” like a wax skull. • On-Time Clock Always Runs Fast

Finally, confirmation that other people set clocks ahead to avoid running late. The trick is to fool yourself into perpetual confusion, never quite knowing what time it really is. Fabrica’s Tak Cheung has designed a clock whose minute hand is always bent forward by a few minutes. One problem though: surf to On-Time’s product page and you’ll learn right away that the clock runs exactly three minutes fast, ruining the mystery. But what happens if you set this clock ahead by an additional amount? Total chaos, followed by a tear in the fabric of the space-time continuum. Maybe that’s why there’s no word on pricing or availability. style="text-align: left;">Consider yourself blessed if you can’t tell the difference between low-end speakers and Bose or Bang & Olufsen, because this sexy Altec Lansing setup will only cost you $100. The Expressionist Plus includes a pair of 2-inch, 4-watt speakers with adjustible bases for directing the sound, plus a 5.25-inch, 20-watt desktop subwoofer that can be stashed virtually anywhere. An auxiliary in jack makes it easy to connect iPods or other portable players in case the party tires of your music collection. As for sound quality, you’d have to hear it to be the judge, but if looks and price were everything, we’d call this system a keeper. Shopping for produce and other fresh foods, especially in New York City, can be a crapshoot, but Thinkenhaus removes some of the guesswork with the FarmFresh NYC iPhone App. The guide points professional and amateur cooks to local farmers markets selling in-season fruit, vegetables, fish and shellfish. There are 90 products in all and 50 participating farmers markets. Updates are automatic, and you can even create a grocery list or track the seasonality of individual items. That sounds a lot more appetizing than wading through piles of mushy tomatoes at the local bodega. FarmFresh NYC is available from the App Store now for $3, and versions for San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New Orleans are on the way. Onlookers may already be impressed with your stable of sexy Apple products, but perhaps its time to replace those bland blacks and grays with something more meaningful. HunterGatherer’s InCase products for the iPhone and and 15-inch MacBook Pro are “a purposefully fake version of something natural,” according to designer Todd St. John. “I also enjoy seeing it as a wrapper for a concentrated brick of technology.” How poetic. For the MacBook, the $60 sleeve is simply a clutch for safekeeping, while the iPhone’s $50 slider case is a new skin in its own right. And if your friends still aren’t jealous, tell them HunterGatherer has worked for Nike, VH1 and the New York Times. If pure technology doesn’t fill them with envy, name-dropping surely will.

  • You might not think that tents are particularly damaging to the environment but Orange has found a way of reducing even the fabric flophouse’s minuscule carbon footprint.

    Orange Solar tent

They’ve done this not by reducing the energy usage of the tent itself but by focusing on the recharging of all those little gadgets that you’re bound to have taken camping with you.

Orange, alongside US product design consultancy Kaleidoscope, has used “Cutting edge eco-energy technology” has created a tent that allows campers to power their gadgets from a WiFi-enabled control panel incorporating a magnetic induction driven charging point. The charging point is in turn powered by photovoltaic fabric mounted on three ‘glides’ that slide over the top of the tent throughout the day so they’re always pointing towards the sun.

    Kaleidoscope strategist, McKenty Aim said:

The development of photovoltaic fabric will revolutionise festival tent design, in working with Orange we have created a vision of camping that we believe is glimpse to a great future.

The tent also comes with a few other features:

The ‘glo-cation’ feature makes the tent glow when the camper gets close to it (using RFID or an SMS message) so you can find it in the dark!

    Orange Solar tent

You won’t get cold at night either since the ground sheet incorporates under-floor heating.

Orange’s Solar tent is just a concept at the moment but will be on display at this year’s Glastonbury festival.

style="text-align: center;"> class="size-full wp-image-15142 aligncenter" src="http://www.gearcrave.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/OrangeSolarConceptTent3.jpg" alt="OrangeSolarConceptTent3 Solar Concept Tent Provides All the Comforts of Work" width="570" height="427" title="Solar Concept Tent Provides All the Comforts of Work" />

Arguably, the best part about camping is the escape from eye-scorching computer screens and carpal tunnel-inducing keyboards. But hey, Orange knows it’s hard to get away. The company’s Glastonbury Solar Concept Tent uses photovoltaic fabric to charge a flexible LCD screen and wireless Internet, presumably provided by a 3G data subscription. But that’s not all: “Glo-cation” technology allows campers to find their site via SMS messaging or RFID signal, lighting up the shelter like a beacon. The iPod Mini is an outdated model, so it’s only fitting that Jozaeh’s MP3 player is encased in the wood of a stately old Australian red cedar tree. Camphor Laurel comprises the click wheel, and brass plates and screws hold everything together. Says the creator: “I was given a new iPod Mini for Christmas and I just couldn’t leave my trusty old mini to sit unused somewhere.” Sounds like it was his first stab at a wooden iPod mod, and we say he did an admirable job. Sadly, it’s only a matter of time before the battery kicks the bucket and this wooden iPod becomes a true antique. • The FTC is planning to monitor and crack down on bloggers that are given undisclosed freebies for positive coverage of their product or brand.

Savvy consumers often go online for independent consumer reviews of products and services, scouring through comments from everyday Joes and Janes to help them find a gem or shun a lemon.

What some fail to realize, though, is that such reviews can be tainted: Many bloggers have accepted perks such as free laptops, trips to Europe, $500 gift cards or even thousands of dollars for a 200-word post. Bloggers vary in how they disclose such freebies, if they do so at all.

I think the FTC is on the right track, bloggers that receive payment for their posts should disclose who paid them. I look online to find reviews on all kinds of things. I don’t plan a vacation or buy much of anything without checking what other people have to say online. I would hate to think that one of my purchasing decisions was made on a false impression.

Teckh.com will always give you an honest opinion without any influence from the corporation whose product we are reviewing. You can bet this because we rarely get anything for free. Everything we’ve been given we give back to our readers and if it’s no good we will let you know because you might be the one we give it to.

2UNFOLD Laptop Bag Folds 8 Ways

Road warriors know that toting a laptop bag can be a tedious game of switching shoulders to prevent fatigue. Depending on how you look at it, Hard Graft’s 2UNFOLD laptop bag, with its eight possible configurations, is either a blessing or a curse. The Italian leather bag has a strap for slinging 17-inch laptops over one or both shoulders and a fastener to hold that strap down when using handles instead. For laptops 13 inches and smaller, part of the bag can be folded over to a courier style, with either leather or canvas exposed. With the strap tucked away, this smaller configuration becomes a clutch that tucks under the forearm. The 2UNFOLD costs 349 Euros (roughly $483) direct from Hard Graft. • It seems like there are a whole lot of people coming up with new ways to search and find information. There’s Wolfram Alpha, Microsoft’s newly launched Bing, and now there’s Hunch. Bing is trying to compete directly with Google where Wolfram Alpha and Hunch are trying to generate more specific results. With Wolfram Alpha it’s more like a uber-powerful wikipedia. Rather than searching Wolfram for a list of other sites with information you can search for something like ‘ticker msft’ and it will give you some great details about Microsoft’s financial situation.

With Hunch you teach it about yourself so when you want to find something you might like it can answer to the best of it’s ability with a personalized answer. Say you are in the mood to go out for dinner but you don’t know where to go. Search Hunch for ‘What should I make for dinner?’ it will ask you a few questions to get a feel for what you might closely be in the mood for; chicken, beef, fish, or pasta. In the end it suggested I should have Stir Fry, a Burrito, or Pad khing all with a recipe for making each. All of these sounded good but the site forgot to ask if I had the ingredients to make any of these dishes.

For those of you who are new, Hunch helps you make decisions, and gives you results it wouldn’t give other people, getting smarter over time as more people use it. We would like it very much if you would like it. We like it! So very much!

For those of you who are not new, you can now do things you couldn’t do before. You can use the site without logging in — though of course Hunch’s hunches are much better if you do. We give you code so you can post widgets on your blog (it’s on the result page). There’s a new Explore page, which has all kinds of neat-o stuff on it, and which we’ll keep updated with new topics, new users and those interesting correlations that are the byproduct of all our question-answering technology (and which we’ve been posting occasionally to our Twitter). Uncategorized

The Geek Atlas (128 places where science & technology come alive) is a unique approach to a travel guide. The guide covers 128 locations around the world that have scientific or technological significance and includes their GPS coordinates and the actual science behind the location.

The Geek Atlas is not only a travel guide, but includes equations, diagrams and some extremely technical data. Many of the locations are in the UK and US but also includes locations in Australia, Germany, France & Japan among others. The information is certainly not something you find contained within most travel guides, but is a great resource if feel like checking out somewhere a little different on this years summer vacation.

Here are some of my favorites:

    • Ecuador, Galapagos Islands (Darwin)
    • England, Bletchley Park (Enigma Code)
    • England, Farnborough  (Air Science Museum)
    • US, 1 Infinite Loop, CA (Apple HQ)

    AT&T 3GS pricing woes

    Jun 10
    Uncategorized

AT&T is starting to see a substantial amount of backlash regarding the latest iPhone pricing. It appears there are actually three different pricing levels as follows:

    New and qualifying AT&T customers:

    • 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) – $199
    • 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) – $299

Early upgrade customers (iPhone 3G owners):

    • 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) – $399.00
    • 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) – $499.00

    No-contract, no-commit or non-qualifying customers:

    • 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) – $599.00
    • 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) – $699.00

The real complaints are coming from existing 3G customers who are unable to get the lower tier pricing (in addition to a lack of support for MMS and tethering). Those customers signed a 2 year contract to get a subsidized iPhone 3G and have only fulfilled 1 years of that contract. This may make sense from a numbers standpoint, but it does take into account the core early adopter crowd. These are the people they are annoying. The core crowd. The loyal iPhone fans. Are they crazy!

Many first generation iPhone customers upgraded to a 3G without penalty due to the first generation having no subsidy. This is not the case when upgrading from a 3G to a 3GS. I am sure if the pricing was the lower tier many 3G customer would upgrade (including myself) but are now going to hold off until the magical 18 months are up on the current 3G contract that allows for the lower pricing option, or moving to a different carrier and phone platform.

Apple should be forcing AT&T to think out of the box when it comes to pricing. If Apple are going to release a new handset every year yet AT&T are locking you into a 2 year contract, that doesn’t seem to gel well with the early adopter and core apple fan crowd. What if they were to offer a trade-in program on existing hardware or a flat yearly upgrade fee that guaranteed a new handset when released (even if not every year).  There are many options outside of the conventional pricing model that apparently they refuse to consider. Any others anyone can think of?

Role on the days when the iPhone is no longer tied to the AT&T monopoly and there is some healthy competition. Apple, please make it sooner rather than later!

Phil Schiller opened an eagerly anticipated and speculated World Wide Developers’ Conference today standing in for a still-absent Steve Jobs. Many updates to the iPhone and Safari had been ‘pre-announced’ and Snow Leopard was always going to be a minor update so hopes were not particularly high. But in an era where Jobs sightings are few and far between and WWDCs have been offering less and less revolutionary hardware over recent years this year’s event offered a few announcements worth raising a cheer about.

    Apple OS X Snow Leopard

My first paragraph remarks may sound a little harsh. After all it may be to Apple’s credit that the expected changes to it’s operating system and its phones are so minor when Microsoft is busy re-writing Vista and trying to convince us that Windows 7 is a completely different animal. So here is a rundown of the recent updates to the hardware and software of a company whose products actually work:

    15-inch MacBook Pro

Recent changes to the 17 inch MacBook Pro are applied to the 15 inch version including the Unibody. We also see the ExpressCard slot replaced by an SD card slot (can’t we have both?).

    MacBook Pro SD-Card slot

The updated MacBook Pro comes with what seems to be the same built-in, non-removable battery as in the current unibody 17-inch machine. Phil tels us that the cell will last the average user around five years (1,000 recharges), and a charge could last around seven hours under ideal conditions.

The CPU is also upgaded. Phil tells us:

“…it’s the fastest notebook we’ve ever made. Up to a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, and up to 8GB of RAM. You can get up to 500GB in hard drives, or up to 256GB SSD.”

There will be three standard configurations:

    • $1699 (2.53GHZ, 4GB RAM)
    • $1999 (2.66GHz, 4GB RAM 320GB HD)
    • $2299 (2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD)

    13-inch MacBook

The updated MacBook comes with the same battery as the Pro and the SD card slot. Apple has also added:

    • Up to 8GB of RAM
    • 50GB Storage
    • Backlit keyboard
    • FireWire 800 port

In addition Apple has added the 13-inch MacBook to the Pro Range.

    Prices will start at $1199.

They’re also updating the Air with more aggressive configurations and prices which will now start at $1799 — $700 lower than before.

Phil boasts that these are now the greenest laptops money can buy.

    Snow Leopard

Bertrand Serlet inytroduces us to Snow Leopard which enjoys a large number of tweeks but nothing revolutionary:

    • Exchange support (mail, calendar, address book)
    • Finder rewrite:
    • Fewer wait cursors
    • New eject manager
    • Out of process plugins
    • Faster cancellation
    • Customizable search scope
    • Put back from trash
    • Contextual menu consistency
    • Animations
    • Enhanced icon previews
    • Faster icon drawing
    • More consistent click-through
    • Faster empty trash
    • Icon size adjuster
    • New services menu

Bertrand enthuses about some of the user interface features:

“Next up, the Dock — we’ve had a feature that we use to deal with clutter, called Expose, and now we’ve built it into the dock.”

You click and hold on an app and it automatically zooms out your active windows.

“We’ve made installs 45% faster. And after you install, you recover disk space… it’s over half the footprint of the previous version.”

Thats going to be very handy for those of us already running out of disk space.

“Preview, we’ve changed the way text selection works — we use AI to find the right text in the right place.”

    Some other features:

    • Handwriting recognition for the trackpad!
    • Safari Is updated to version 4 on Leopard, Tiger and Windows.
    • All major system apps are 64-bit
    • General Central Dispatch – coordinating threads accross Leopard

Bertrand then announces OpenCL, a C-based technology that Apple claims moves beyond OpenGL and that all the major graphics card manufacturers are behind. Here’s a list:

    Apple's OPenCL partners

    iPhone

Phil Schiller is back and announces that there are now more than 50,000 apps in the iPhone app store. He then moves onto the new OS 3.0 features

    • Cut copy and paste
    • Shake to undo
    • Developer APIs
    • Cocoa Touch support for text
    • Landscape on key apps
    • MMS

MMS will be supported by 29 carriers when Apple launches it. Here’s another list:

    List of MMS carriers

    • Spotlight can now search anything on your phone, including apps
    • You can now use iTunes to rent and purchase movies right from your phone.
    • AutoFill remembers user names and passwords to login to websites
    • Tethering  allows you to share you connection with your computer.

Tethering works with Macs and PCs, wired over USB, or wireless with Bluetooth. It is a seamless experience. There’s no need to run any software once it’s turned on. This requires carrier support. Apple has 22 partners in 44 countries.

Bertrand then explains a new technology to help you find a lost iPhone:

“Hopefully you haven’t had a 30 Rock experience, but this is why we created Find My iPhone. If you lose or misplace the phone, you can login to MobileMe on any browser and it will show you where the phone is. Now, if it is lost or stolen, you can send a remote wipe command which will delete all of your data.”

He demonstrates and sure enough a Google map appears showing the location of his phone.

Find your iPhone on Google map

    iPhone 3GS

    Phil:

“This is a really fast iPhone. Something as simple launching messaging, 2 times faster… everything is faster. These are all speeds against an iPhone 3G.”

If the iPhone was a car the 3GS would be the sports version. SunSpider tests show the 3GS to have less than half the rating of the 3G with 3.0.

The 3GS also comes with a brand new 3 megapixel autofocus camera (iPhone users are still getting low resolution cameras when 5MP cameras have been on phones for more than 2 years now). However — hang on to you’re hats — it records video!

    Phil continues:

“There’s another great feature — we call it voice control. You can hold down the home button, and a brand new UI pops up — the voice control interface. And talk about easy to use, the commands you make are scrolling by as you use it. You can make calls with your voice, you can control your iTunes by voice. I can ask my phone, ‘what’s playing now’ and it’ll speak the title and artist back to me.”

Phil seems to be getting into his stride:

“There’s also a built-in digital compass. The compass app is a new one that comes on the iPhone — you can tap to go right into Maps, and if you tap a second time, it will orient the map to where you’re facing.”

    iPhone compass

“And something businesses have asked for … hardware encryption. All new iPhone 3GSs will have it.”

The battery lasts for up to 5 hours 3G talk time, 9 hours of WiFI internet. The basic model comes with 16GB of storage and will retail for $199. The 32GB model will cost you $299. The original iPhone 3G will be reduced to $100.

The iPhone 3GS will be available in the US and prime export markets in a week and a half (19th June) and will be in 88 more countries by 9th August.

The NEC CRV-43 may look very similar to the Alienware curved monitor featured here in January 2008 and that’s because it’s basically the same device (they’re both made by Ostendo) with NEC branding. The difference is we will soon be able to buy it!

    NEC CRV-43 curved monitor

The NEC CRV-43 comes with some astounding specs:

    • Seamless curved screen
    • 2880 x 900 double WXGA native resolution
    • 200 cd/m² brightness
    • 0.02ms Rapid Response
    • 10,000:1 contrast ratio
    • 100% coverage of sRGB colour gamut
    • 99.3% coverage of Adobe RGB colour gamut
    • 32:10 aspect ratio
    • Single link DVI-D and HDMI 1.3 input connectors
    • USB 2.0 connectivity for easy use of peripherals
    • Front panel controls
    • On Screen Display (OSD) and software-based GUI

Keith Yanke, Director of Product Marketing for NEC Display Solutions said:

“The NEC CRV43 curved display provides an excitingly immersive viewing experience for any type of user. Its lightning-fast response time coupled with its seamless curved screen provides enhanced comfort, decreased frustration and increased productivity. The monitor eliminates the bezel and screen gap issues that have complicated users’ work environment for years.”

    NEC CRV-43 curved monitor

NEC is aiming the CRV-43 at professional users such as graphic designers, educators, government workers, financial professionals, command and control and home office. This is an interesting departure from Alienware’s very obvious targeting of ’serious’ games addicts. The CRV-43 would also be an ideal monitor setup for simulations.

The CRV-43 will be on display at InfoComm on June 17-19 at Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. It will then be on sale from July at a retail price of $7,999 (£4,878).

    Pictures from Computex 2009

Two of my colleagues are in Taipei again attending Computex 2009 this week and the news is that there appear to be a whole lot of netbooks on view. As ever Nick is uploading pictures to Picasa so you can get some idea of what’s about. As the days progress Nick will update the images, but it is a slow, slow process. Keep your eyes peeled for the rest of the week – and make sure you’re not looking at last years’ pictures by mistake ;) . Some of you might notice that some things like the Asus Skype phone have been around for a little while. In fact it has been around since September of last year.

Update 1: More pictures are available.

Update 2: Pictures from day 3 are available now.

Update 3: Pictures from day 4 are available now. There are also some shots of Taipei
