Original article: EVGA InterView 1700 bends over backwards for your screen viewing needs
From Machines that go Bing

This EVGA InterView dual-monitor system allows you to view it in just about any conceivable way. It’s a dual display supporting two 17-inch flat screens attached to a single centre stand. Its the mounting of these monitors that is so clever as it allows a huge range of mounting configurations and even allows you to flip a monitor over to show someone on the other side of your desk.

EVGA InterView Monitors and stand

The monitor resolutions are 1440 x 900 which isn’t so great on their own but do combine to create some considerable screen real-estate. The screens can operate in continuous desktop mode (as above) or clone mode.

The base not only supports the screens but also houses a 1.3MP webcam and three USB 2.0 ports.

Both the flat panels can pivot vertically so both can be orientated to a comfortable angle but the clever bit is that they can pivot right over so that someone on the other side of the monitors can see your work. The screen contents is automatically rotated to compensate.

EVGA is currently pitching the system to business users but I can see a lot of home-owners seeing the benefits of a system like this. Available from the company for $649.99.

Another Android Security Update

Jul 18
Uncategorized

I woke this morning to a new security update notification Android - beep beepon my T-mobile G1. The update can be downloaded directly from Google’s servers if you don’t yet have it. The build number changes from CRB43 to CRC1. The update itself is only 2mb but there seems to be little information as to what it fixes, however, the largest patch is the recovery image at 1.4mb (line 43). I’ve extracted the update and below is a file listing of the contents for those that are interested. Incidentally my T-mobile G1 is actually running with an O2 SIM and still got the OTA update. The same should be the case if you’re using any other mobile network.

Original article: Apple Tablet rumour gets price point and release date
From Machines that go Bing

.

READ ABOUT THE RELEASE OF APPLE’S IPAD IN OUR LATEST ARTICLE

We can now add two more pieces of data to the body of ‘knowledge’ circulating in the blogosphere about a possible forthcoming Apple tablet.

Apple tablet

Here’s what is currently strongly suspected an upcoming Apple tablet device

  • Screen size: 9.7 inches
  • Chipset: Intel dual core or Samsung ARM11
  • OS: App-store-compatible version of OS X
  • Release date: October
  • Price: $500 – $800

The two later gems of wisdom have come to us courtesy of a China Times article which states that Apple is working on a large touchscreen device. Chinese supply companies are all quoting October as the release window.

It’s great to see the idea of an Apple tablet format machine becoming a reality but I’ll be very disappointed if, as rumours seem to be indicating, the new device is just a large format iTouch that can only run the AppStore programs. For $800 I’d want the full flexibility of a tablet format Macbook.

Let us know your thoughts.

Original article: Andrew Chase’s mechanical cheetah stalks the underworld
From Machines that go Bing

Designer Andrew Chase is already knows for his mechanical animals through his Timmy underworld project and the latest addition to his collection is this stunning-looking robotic cheetah.

Mechanical Cheetah

The Cheetah will join other mechanical animals, a giraffe and elephant, in the collection that stalk the imaginary ‘Timmy’ underworld created by Andrew Chase who says:

Before I started this latest project, I promised myself that this time, things will be different. I shall remember history, I will learn from the excesses of  my past. I will build it small, I will build it light, and above all, I will build it quickly. I failed on all three counts. Dismally. Ah well, as the great sage Dirty Harry often said, “a man’s got to know his limitations.”

The cheetah measures 24″ high and 50″ nose to tail and weighs about 40 pounds. She took about 60 hours, spaced over 10 weeks time, to build. She’s constructed out of electrical conduit, transmission parts and 20-gauge steel.

Th following youTube movie shows the sculpture animated to look like a robotic cheetah running.

Cheap HD Quality Pocket Camcorder

Jul 9
Uncategorized

I was able to pick up the Kodak zi6 for $99 refurbished from Amazon.com, and at this amazing price, who could go wrong? I added an 8GB SDHC card for $20 and it’s a complete package for less than $120. Much cheaper than the competing Flip HD cameras.

Overall I love this camera, great quality build, great HD quality video and super simple to use (it only has four buttons!).

Some of the features I really like:

Built in USB – no need for an extra cable to transfer files.

Video Quality – The HD quality looks really good.

Mac Compatible – Requires no extra software, just plug in and downloads straight into iphoto/imovie.

Things I don’t like:

Default Quality – when turned on, it defaults to HD @ 30fps instead of the higher quality HD @ 60fps. And as far as I can tell there is no way to change this default option.

Battery Life – Using AA batteries instead of a lithium can of course be convenient as picking up batteries on the fly is a simple task, however battery life suffers. I haven’t ran it down completely yet but I can imagine it not quite making a full day of use.

Gmail Adds Some Features

Jul 2
Uncategorized

Google has increased the attachment size from 20MB to 25MB

“With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up to 25 megabytes (MB) in size. Please note that you may not be able to send larger attachments to contacts who use other email services with smaller attachment limits. If your attachment bounces, you should invite them to Gmail,”

Google has also enhanced the labels

1) New location for labels
You’ll notice your labels in a new location on the left of your inbox (or on the right, for those of you using the Arabic, Hebrew, or Urdu versions of Gmail). Instead of having their own section, your labels are now above your chat list, grouped together with Inbox, Drafts, Chats and other system labels.

2) Label hiding and showing
You now have control over which of your labels show. We’ve done our best to get you started by automatically showing the labels you use most and hiding the rest. Label hiding is my favorite new feature, since it saves me from having to look through labels I rarely use. If I ever need to reach any of my old labels, I just click the “more” link.

If you want to make a lot of changes at once, go to the Labels tab under Settings where you can edit labels in bulk.

For those of you who created label names like _stuff or ++todo++ to force your most-used labels to the top of the list (come on, you know who you are, I did it too…), you don’t have to come up with clever tricks like that anymore ;)

You can now drag messages into labels, just like you can with folders. This does the exact same thing as “Move to” — it labels and archives in one step.

You can drag labels onto messages too. It’s the same thing as using the “Label” button. To label or move many messages at once, first select the messages and then drag and drop the label.

It’s also possible to drag labels into the “more” menu to hide them and vice versa. If you only want to move a couple labels around, I’ve found it quicker than going to Settings.

All of these changes also mean the end of Right-side Labels, an experimental Gmail Labs feature. This is the first Labs feature we’re retiring. (The idea behind Labs was always that things could break or disappear at any time or they might work so well that they become regular features. More on that soon…) Now that labels aren’t in their own little box and take up much less space, moving them around the screen didn’t seem as important. We realize quite a few of you used and liked Right-side Labels, so if you feel strapped for left nav screen real estate without it, try turning on Right-side Chat in Labs instead.

We hope these new changes make labeling even easier and help you stay organized. We’ll be rolling out these labeling features for everyone throughout the day, so if you don’t see them right away please check later today.

The Pirate Bay sold their site for $7.8 million this week to a company called Global Gaming Factory. The Pirate Bay is the most popular torrent site in the whole interworld. Some have said that the $7.8 million is really low for a site that generates so much traffic but with the recent legal battle it seems reasonable to me.

According to the Global Gaming Factory website:

Global Gaming Factory X AB has the biggest network of internet cafés and gaming centers in the world and provides advertisers, software publishers and service providers with an unprecedented access to the large group of tourists and the large gamer community that visit these centers.

Global Gaming Factory X AB’s wholly owned subsidiaries Smartlaunch and CyberCafePro are the leading publishers of cafe management software that is used by thousands of cafes globally. Global Gaming Factory X AB has developed a platform for digital distribution of advertising, games and services that uses this infrastructure of thusands of Internet cafes to target the large group of tourists and the rapidly growing gamer community.

So the real question here is; what does an internet cafe company want with a torrent site? Why would they want to jeopardize their current business with lawsuits from the entertainment industry? Unless of course they are a secret arm of the entertainment industry gathering up information about users on The Pirate Bay.
