zyxelrouter

ZyXEL is at the forefront of networking technology yet again in the consumer electronics segment with their latest release, touted to be the first fixed LTE (Long Term Evolution) CPE/SOHO router in the world. The model, known as the ZLR-2070S, is basically an all-in-one, multi-service gateway which leverages compact, system-on-a-chip (SoC) technology in order to deliver cost-effective, non-FPGA-based LTE connectivity to the masses. For those who are interested to know what the ZyXEL ZLR-2070S is capable of, you might want to head down to CES 2010 and check out their suite in the Renaissance Hotel for more information. Meanwhile, we’ll do our best to offer you a broader overview on the ZLR-2070S until January rolls on.

LTE is most possibly going to be the next big thing, so to speak, in wireless communications technology as it is full well capable of delivering blazing-fast multimedia connectivity on an all-IP platform. Consumers who have gone for LTE would definitely tell you the stark difference in upgrade of performance and services over Internet-enabled fixed and mobile devices that are connected via LTE. Apart from that, LTE also opens up a whole new era of connectivity across various industries which include (but are not limited to) consumer electronics, appliances, health care, public utilities and telematics.

Regardless of whether it is meant for residences or SOHOs, the ZLR-2070S aims not to disappoint by offering a feature-rich, future-proof hardware platform that is optimized for multi service. This will comprise of broadband Internet connectivity, a couple of VoIP ports, home networking through a four-port, 11n wireless switch, a USB port which allows you to hook up a plethora of devices including printers and storage. Service providers are also able to take advantage of the ZLR-2070S by enabling Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) support and other smart home automation services.

You will find that the ZLR-2070S boasts superior data rates of up to 50Mbps throughput in theory, which is much speedier compared to current 3G technologies like HSPA/EV-DO. The router’s 4G wireless connectivity makes it ideal for operators who want to offer such a service in rural or other traditionally under-served markets where new wireline deployments are normally cost-prohibitive. Apart from that, the level of portability afforded makes the ZLR-2070S perfect for virtually any scenario where customers require high-speed, multi-user Internet access in a temporary location. Bosses ought to love this as there would no longer be any more excuse for their minions to claim that there is no Internet connection in the vicinity – assuming 4G connectivity is widespread worldwide.

SS2 out of the hangar for the first time

We’ve got video of last night’s unveiling of VSS Enterprise, the vessel Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic will use the carry well-heeled folks to the edge of space.

Sir Richard and the guys at Scaled Composites rolled Enterprise out of her hangar at the Mojave Air and Space Port, where it was christened by Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger and his less-burly colleague, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico. Enterprise is shown here attached to VMS Eve. The mothership completed flight testing earlier this year; flight tests of the Enterprise are expected early next year. Sub-orbital commercial flights — for those who can afford the $200,000 ticket — could begin as early as 2011.

The CrunchPad is dead, long live the CrunchPad. Looks like the CrunchPad isn’t quite dead and buried after all as Fusion Garage responded to its legal battle with TechCrunch by announcing the Joojoo – which is basically the CrunchPad repackaged. The device will retain its familiar 12″ capacitive touchscreen while boasting a boot up time of a mere 9 seconds, featuring visual links in its menu to common websites including Hulu and Twitter while support offline versions of selected applications such as Gmail. Guess the 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 4GB of internal memory and Wi-Fi connectivity will be retained as well. Pre-orders of Joojoo will begin this coming Friday 11th, where it will retail for $499 while shipping anytime from 8 to 11 weeks from now.

cubic_timer

If you’re tired of the usual kitchen timer, now you can pick yourself up a slightly different type.  Sure, it  still keeps the time like usual.  It just does it with a certain amount of finesse.  With a cool timer like this you could even find different uses for the timer.  Such as setting a timer to make sure your shower doesn’t run a bit too long.  That or you could just stick with the old fashioned route and put it in the kitchen to help you keep track of anything cook up.

In order to work this cube clock, you just turn the cube itself to a different side.  If you want 3 minutes, just turn it to the side with the 3.  There is also a side for 10, 30 and 60 minutes.  Then there is an LCD display to let you know just how much time is left.  This timer came from the Japanese design collective IDEA.  Don’t worry, it is actually available for purchase.  It comes in white, yellow and orange for $34 a piece.

Screwed by Wall Street CorkscrewWell, the name says it all. Who hasn’t been screwed by Wall Street? Now you can relive that screwing and know that you are SOL with this cool Wall Street themed corkscrew. It will cost you just $25. Which you probably don’t have thanks to these Wall Street fat-cats.

Feel free to curse and call them names as you uncork the bottle, pretending that you are sticking it in some banker’s ear…Or other orifice.

Insert and twist. They deserve it.

R2-D2 string lights for your geek Christmas treeNothing says Christmas like a string or two of droid lights on your Christmas tree. Besides you probably already have all of the other Star Wars ornaments on your tree.

It’s like having a whole clone army of Astromechs. The little robot lights come in a set of 10 per strand and are 12 inches apart. These are priced at about $15-$25. And if you don’t want them on your tree they make great geek gifts.

I might just order some myself.

Mobile Cinema DVD Projector

Dec 8
Uncategorized

portableDVDprojector

A DVD projector is rarely something you’d think of as kid friendly.  However, owning one gives kids that movie theater feel within the home.  Hopefully cutting back on costs in the long run and making them more likely to be ok just having friends over to watch movies at home instead of going to the theater.  Well this projector is meant for portability and is brightly colored enough to look great in any kid’s room.

As portable as this is, you could always set it up in odd places to make things more interesting.  Like setting up a fort in the attic.  Just pop in a DVD and it’ll project the image onto the wall and play the sound through the projector’s built-in stereo speakers.  It can show up to 50 inches on the wall.  Since it uses LED lights, it doesn’t use quite so much power.  There’s also a spot to plug in a microphone, just in case you’re dying for a karaoke night.  You can purchase the projector for £159.99 or about $260 from Firebox.

Now here’s a good idea. In a way, anyhow — when was the last time you really needed little 3D letters? Doesn’t matter, it’s still cool. This font, if you print it large enough, lets you cut out the letters, fold down and glue the tabs where indicated, and boom, papercraft letters!

I can see this being useful in a grade school environment, or for decorating a twee apartment. Who lives here? Clearly Zoe, since her name is hanging from the ceiling in foot-high letters.

The name of the font is “Punched Out” and it’s available for free from dafont.com, which looks like it’s got a lot more cool fonts. Time to browse.

Portable DVD projector

Dec 8
Uncategorized

Portable DVD projectorCheck out this somewhat retro and overly plasticized portable projector with a built-in DVD player. It looks like an old Viewmaster-type toy. But it’s not all about looks. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. Because what it does is allow you to plug it in, pop in a DVD, and watch a movie on a 50-inch screen in about 3 minutes. Anywhere.

Can’t beat that right? You don’t buy this for the design and you won’t base your home theater setup around it, but it’s damn convenient.

You can watch a movie on any surface at any time. We like that.

Is your skin starting to look like this? Uh oh!

The knock on nerds is that we don’t care about our appearance:  our clothes, our hair, our face, whether our socks match, if our pants actually reach our shoetops, and so on.  Speaking as an almost life-long nerd, I have to say that I usually don’t give my skin a single thought (I let my wife Sami help me with the clothing issue–no, really!).  I don’t like dry hands, I don’t want to get skin cancer, and I would like to look as young as possible, sure; but I’m a nerd, you know?  Skin care?  I’m busy reviewing a new iPhone case–who has the time for hand cream?  And what about getting all the greasy kid’s stuff on my keyboard?  Ick!

Well, the Skin MD Natural folks think they can help, and without the greasy-keyboard issue.

Gyroscopic Dumbbell – $69.95

gyroscopic dumbell
Used by NASA astronauts to maintain their upper body conditioning in space, this is the gyroscopic dumbbell that strengthens and rehabilitates muscles in the hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders. Holding the tennis ball-sized device and rotating your wrist causes the internal gyroscope to spin up to 13,000 rpm and provide up to 38 lbs. of torque resistance to strengthen the wrists, biceps, triceps, and deltoids. A study showed these increased maximum handgrip strength by 11%, and this low-impact exercise can also increase the range of motion in your hands and help rehabilitate carpal tunnel and tennis elbow injuries. A docking station automatically initiates the spinning, and an integrated tachometer measures and displays the current rpm, highest rpm achieved, and total number of revolutions, allowing you to easily track progress.

Arcade Legends Full Size 125 Game System – $3700

arcade legends
Asteroids. Centipede. Missile Command. Over one hundred classic games return to life in this full-sized upright console. Castoven Microwave

We’ve reviewed some pretty interesting kitchen gadgets such as the worlds smallest microwave oven and today, we got word that two Japanese researchers from Keio University have created a YouTube powered microwave.

Castoven Microwave

To create their masterpiece, the geeks, errr, researchers used any old generic brand microwave, but of good quality. The only requirement was that it have an LED display screen in the door panel and in this case, the LED screen measured 10.4-inches.

A set of speakers were built into the microwave, pleasing the audiophiles looking for good quality sound. Finally the whole contraption was connected to a Mac, although with a little tinkering, it would probably work equally well with a Windows PC.

The Castoven microwave is designed to warm food and find a suitable YouTube video of equal length to entertain you while you wait. The whole process is automated with the unit making use of the Adobe AIR application which obtains digital videos using YouTube’s API.
