After moving this year, Kevin and I realized we were a bit light on Christmas tree decorations; but instead of going out and buying a bunch of them, his girls and I spent a day making salt dough ornaments. This is something that my mom used to do with my brother and me when we were kids. Mom thinks it’s because play-dough wasn’t easily available living overseas, but it could just as easily be because we were on an enlisted military man’s budget and she was a stay-at-home-mom. Whatever the reason, salt dough is very similar to play-dough, and the best part is that if you like what you’ve made, you can bake it and keep it forever.

The recipe couldn’t be simpler, and I think that you will agree that it is an inexpensive and fun way to pass the day.

Here’s how you do it …

I was buzzing around over on the FCC website today looking at some recent filings, when what did I come upon but a virtual goldmine of spanking new flat-panel displays on the way from LG in early 2010.

From the looks of this manual, as well as a number of devices recently submitted on the site, LG plans on a major refresh of their display line, with 21 new display models mentioned on the front cover, along with a couple of others I managed to scrounge up. The new models include:

  • LCD TVs: 32LD550, 42LD550, 46LD550, 60LD550, 52LD550, 47LD650 and the 55LD650
  • LED-lit LCD TVs: 22LE5300, 26LE5300, 42LE5400, 47LE5400, 55LE5400, 42LE5500, 47LE5500, 55LE5500, 60LE5500, 42LE7500, 47LE7500, 55LE7500, 47LE8500 and 55LE8500
  • Plasma TVs: 50PK750 and 60PK750

With displays ranging from 22″ to 60″, it looks like there’s something for everyone coming out. That 60″ LED/LCD sure sounds nice to me. Woot! The shot below shows a rather unsexy photo of the sexy top-of-the-line LED LCD model, the 55LE8500. Check out how skinny it is. Looks about as thin as Samsung’s super slim LED LCDs…

LG_55LE8500_lcd_led_television

There’s also a couple of smaller LED lit LCD models which might be nice in a bedroom or used as computer displays – the 22LE5300 and the 26LE5300, pictured below:

And here’s a decidedly unflattering shot of the ginormous 60″ plasma, the 60PK750:

Further examination of the manuals reveal that at least some of the sets will include internet connectivity (although it looks like wireless still requires an add-on dongle), along with Yahoo! widgets and digital streaming of movies from Netflix, Vudu and YouTube. There’s also the ability to view content from your Picasa albums.

If you’re in the market for a new flat-panel, you might want to wait a few weeks to hear when these will be released and how much they’ll cost. I’m assuming that LG will provide more details at the upcoming CES show in early January.

Quack quack. We here at Craziest Gadgets are BIG BIG BIG fans of ducks. Ducks are the greatest of all birds and our favorite crispy Chinese food item. Yum. This duck won’t end up on a plate with pork fried rice and a wanton soup though, it’s a 4 port USB hub. Just like real ducks, this bird comes in white, yellow and blue.

Google Nexus One Specifications

There’s been a lot of chatter about the Google Nexus One, and although there has been considerable buzz about this new product, there’s been little in the way of a possible release date and hardware specifications. That is until now.

Engadget has discovered that the new Google phone will be available on January 5th but on an invite basis. What exactly does that mean is anyones guess. How do you get onto the invitation list and will Tareq and Michaele Salahi try and crash this invite only party? For the average Joe, if you’re really keen on being one of the first to buy this phone, you might have to turn to Ebay or another online auction site in the hope that one of the invited guests tries to sell his phone.

In terms of hardware, the Google phone will come with Android 2.1 and at 11.5mm thick, it will be slightly thinner then the Apple iPhone 3GS. Other features include 512 Flash, 512 ROM, 4GB microSD (expandable to 32GB), Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, HSPA 900/1700/2100 and a 5MP camera with 2x zoom, autofocus and flash.

We are all feeling the financial pinch!    Blue Plate Special is a weekly review of bargain apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Nothing over $.99.

Through my search of Blue Plate applications I have learned two things.  First, there are some great games and apps available for $.99 or less.  Second, well executed simple design makes for a better app than one who tries to throw in the kitchen sink.  Zlider falls into this category.  The gameplay is a simple concept, but with plenty of challenge and nice graphics they present a really fun game.

See Through Trucks For Road Safety

See Through Truck For Road Safety

If Art Lebedev was the minister of transportation, he’d like to see semi-trucks fitted with 2 LCD display screens on the rear doors and a digital camera mounted on the front of the truck. His concept idea is known as Transparentius and it’s his vision of road safety. Picture this, flying down the highway making good time, only to find yourself behind a slow moving truck. You’d like to pass the truck but are unable to see what lies ahead.

With Transparentius, the front mounted digital camera will relay road information that will be shown on the rear LCD screens. This way you always know what is ahead of the truck in front of you. This isn’t the first time that Lebedev has played around with screen technology as an earlier idea of his was the Optimus Maximus keyboard which was a keyboard that featured a digital screen on each key.

Lebedev does have a good idea but there are some things he’s going to have to work on before this ever saw the light of day. First is cost, what would this system cost to fit onto a truck? Then there’s the concern truck drivers may have about the fragility of the display screens considering that they will be loading and unloading gear from the rear of the truck which could possibly damage the system.

It’s unlikely we’ll see this system any time soon on our local roads and highways, I still think simple ideas are sometimes the best.

599-gtb-fiorano

Ferrari’s long-rumored gas-electric supercar could break cover as early as spring.

Italy’s Quattroroute magazine says Maranello is building a hybrid based on the 599 GTB Fiorano (shown above) using a variation of the kinetic energy recovery system in its Formula 1 cars. The concept car could appear at the Geneva auto show in March.

Quattroroute says the system uses a V12 engine up front with an electric motor at the rear transaxle and a lithium-ion battery. In addition to an added boost in power, the system provides the car with a start-stop function and regenerative braking. It reportedly delivers a 35 percent improvement in fuel economy.

We’ve long known Ferrari is up to something. Britain’s Autocar reported last month that Ferrari has a hybrid drivetrain slated for the successor to the 612 Scaglietti and we’ll see it in 2014. But Autocar says the system uses an electric motor inboard of the front wheels to improve handling, not fuel economy. The idea is having electric motors up front will improve acceleration and handling because the torque delivered to the wheels can be “carefully controlled.”

Whatever the case, it appears a gas-electric from Maranello is just over the horizon.

Apple iPhone 3G

Along with the earlier rumors of a possible 7-inch Apple Tablet, another development for 2010 will the introduction of the next generation Apple iPhone which will feature a 5 megapixel digital camera.

According to unnamed sources, OmniVision Technologies will see a doubling in CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders from Apple next year and part of this order will include the 5 megapixel CIS. Although Apple is hush on this order, it is widely suspected that the 5 megapixel sensors will be integrated into the next generation iPhones that we will likely see in mid 2010. With other Apple announcements due early next year, it’s hoped that Apple might shed some light on this and perhaps flame the fires a bit by giving us an inkling of what the new iPhones will have in store.

I’m fairly sure that most of the Christmas season is directly centered around food.  I’m sure there are other things, but sweets are a big part of the holiday.  Be it plates heaping with fudge, sugar cookies or candy canes.  There are always plenty of sweets around.  Although an ice cream cone isn’t a traditional Christmas treat, it still fits in the sweets category.  Now you could have a light up fake ice cream cone to keep that sweets theme going year round.  It’s like it being the Christmas season all the time.

This lamp features a giant ice cream cone, to be specific, this ice cream cone is over 2 feet tall.  I don’t advise attempting to eat a real live 2 foot tall ice cream cone in honor of your new lamp though.  I’m pretty sure that’d put you in a permanent state of brain freeze.  The lamp comes with a bulb and plugs into the wall like every other normal lamp.  You can purchase it for $48 from Fred Flare.

Papa, Paparazzi: Video Camera with Telescope Lens

super zoom videocamera
Sure, this is nothing but a cheap video camera from Chinavision but look at the size of that telescopic lens! Dang. That’s an 8x optical zoom. I won’t bother giving you any more specs since I wouldn’t recommend a $97 video camera of this type to any of my readers but hey, look at the lens.

santa-gets-gas

For all the joy of Christmas morning, there’s certainly a lot of waste involved. Reams of wrapping paper, forests of evergreens and piles of unwanted fruitcakes are discarded after the holidays. That got us thinking: Wouldn’t it be great if some of that trash could be repurposed as fuel?

Turns out it can.

We checked with Spencer Quong, an automotive engineer and alt-fuels expert with a sense of humor. He was with the Union of Concerned Scientists before launching his own consulting biz, Quong & Associates. He assured us that family gatherings aren’t the only sources of combustion during the holidays. Pretty much everything you discard at the holidays could, theoretically, be used as fuel, though Quong warns “it’s hard to think of something that isn’t South Park–ish.”

We’ll get to that in a moment. But first on our list is fruitcake. They certainly aren’t edible, and they’ll take about a million years to biodegrade, so what the hell are we supposed to do with them? The answer is simple.

Biofuel.

“There is, in the fruitcake, sugar and grain,” Quong told Autopia. “All of that can be converted to ethanol.”

While Quong conceded that the refining process would be cost-prohibitive, the supply is nearly endless.

“There’s probably a million fruitcakes that have been passed around for 20 years,” he said.

We all spend too much time carefully wrapping gifts, only to have the recipients mindlessly rip all that paper and ribbon to shreds. Quong says you can turn it into cellulosic ethanol. Got a diesel in the driveway? Increased consumption of Chinese food on Christmas Eve would inevitably yield waste cooking oil that could be used as biodiesel. If you’re really ambitious, convert the car to run on veggie oil. Christmas trees and yule logs are ripe for gasification, a process that creates synthetic fuel from carbonaceous solids. Unfortunately, Santa and his reindeer might end up coughing from the resulting pollution.

“Gasification is a little bit out there because of the smog emissions that come with it, and carrying all that equipment is difficult,” Quong said.

Speaking of reindeer, biomethane captured from Rudolph’s refuse may be an ideal source of renewable energy.

“It’s very similar to cow manure,” Quong said. “You take the methane that comes off that, and then you can power vehicles from that.”

While reindeer poo could power UPS trucks bearing gifts, we’re still glad Gene Autry never got the chance to sing about it.
