This amazing spinning Christmas star was completed just in time to awe any passing drivers in Münich, Germany.

9,000 LEDs were superglued to a wind turbine in just under two weeks. Thanks to smart energy systems like smart grids and power highways, it only consumes as much energy as a hair dryer! The 9,000 LEDs put out as much light as 20,000 Christmas candles.

The Siemens SuperStar was created by multimedia artist Michael Pendry for the company and will be on display until January 6th in Münich. It was created to showcase and promote sustainable energy and green innovation. I think that passing motorists might find it a wee bit distracting.

Although it looks amazing in these long exposure photography shots, it’s actually disappointing to see it in the video below. The turbine doesn’t spin very fast, so the lights don’t blend together. You clearly see the blades slowly rotating. The photos of it look amazing though.

Netbooks are “necessary evil” for Microsoft and Intel
It doesn’t matter where you go it seems that Netbooks are still very much on the top of the agenda for discussion by those involved in or interested in the computer industry and are still on the top of shopping lists for buyers.
Consumers just love them but the sellers can’t stand them, and funnily enough for pretty much the same reason and that is that netbooks are cheap.

Not only is 2010 nearly here (which we all know is officially ‘The Future’), but now you can also talk to your friends in a futuristic manner using older based technology – none of your expensive mobile phone watches here, oh no these walkie talkies have a range of up to 5km. These would be great for outdoor trips such as hiking or perhaps using them for multi-car road trips across the country.

Jewelled Bee USB: Functional Fashion
It’s always exciting when something pretty is useful as well. The Bee USB Flash Drive is a USB flash drive with 4GB memory. Not only that, but it ticks all my style boxes too: it makes a statement while still looking elegant, it’s blingy, and trust me, you’ll be seeing bee-related accessories everywhere over the next year! The 4GB of memory for me is really just an amazingly useful cherry on top. I can’t imagine losing important files or forgetting my flash drive at home (like I usually do…) because it will always be around my neck! Genius

Gaj-it Weekly Roundup – 25.12.09 is a post from: UK Gadget and Tech News, Reviews and Shopping Site – Gaj-It.com
Bruce Schneier wrote a great piece on the unencrypted Predator drone video feeds, noting that the drones were built for a post-Soviet, pre-insurgent era and that encryption, in the case of a live feed, is more of a problem than a threat.
The problem is, the world has changed. Today’s insurgent adversaries don’t have KGB-level intelligence gathering or cryptanalytic capabilities. At the same time, computer and network data gathering has become much cheaper and easier, so they have technical capabilities the Soviets could only dream of. Defending against these sorts of adversaries doesn’t require military-grade encryption only where it counts; it requires commercial-grade encryption everywhere possible.
While I agree with him whole-heartedly – Bruce knows his stuff – this is a huge PR mess for drone warfare. Luckily, these are drones and drones don’t have feelings and I suspect that once insurgents notice that they’re on a drone’s live feed, it’s probably too late.
Nice scoop by MacRumors, which reportedly retrieved historical evidence that Apple has acquired the domain name islate.com back in 2007. Apparently, the Cupertino company registered the domain through brand protection firm Mark Monitor to conceal the fact that the domain name is theirs, as usual, but was briefly listed as the owner at some point in the past nonetheless.
If correct, that means we can add a rumor to a rumor: that the unconfirmed, unannounced but most definitely coming (maybe) Apple tablet device will be named iSlate. That would be in line with earlier connections of the ’slate’ term to the illusive tablet computer, based on New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller calling it something to that effect in a speech.
Let’s dig a little deeper.

There are several different types of speakers that will work for your bathroom. No matter what your tastes or preferences, it won’t be hard for you to find that perfect fit for you. These cute speakers will keep your iPod safe, all the while giving a cute and quirky shape to your music. The water droplets will make sure your music can go with you even into the most damp conditions.
I wouldn’t exactly dunk these under the water in your bathtub. However, they are water resistant, so you could hang one in your shower. Just put your iPod within the water drop and it’ll allow for your music to play while it’s out of harm’s way. It stays powered by using a set of batteries. It’s compatible with the iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle and various other MP3 players. It also has an earphone jack. You can purchase the speaker for $58 in pink, blue or white.

Heated USB No Finger Santa Gloves

Sure these USB Santa heated no finger gloves kind of look like something a (very nerdy) stripper would wear but if you want to know what Santa’s helpers at the North Pole wear to stay warm at their cubicles, this is it. I visited last year, and yes they’ve upgraded from pen and paper to computers to keep track of all the outgoing gifts as well as the naughty and nice lists. Word on the street is that presents were delivered this year, so it looks like the computers held up, no unfortunately timed blue screen of death. Maybe Santa’s on a Mac.

The Star Trek Stockings Were Hung by the Chimney with Care

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nerdolous soon would be there. It’s a very nerdy Christmas with these homemade Star Trek uniform stockings which boldly go where no stockings have gone before.

A member of the University of Pennsylvania’s Modlab spent the summer at Willow Garage, makers of the door-opening, self-plugging PR2 robot. Either the Modlab guy was really good friends or secretly annoyed with one of the researchers there, because he decided to install a robot that lobbed ping pong balls at the researchers’ cubicle as a parting gift.

For me the funniest thing about the whole prank is the sheer number of balls fired by the robot. But who knows, maybe this will make your day so here’s the video:
Click to View Embedded Video Clip
If I had the nerdery necessary to build a ping pong-firing robot, I’d hide it in the men’s bathroom and make it fire at anyone who pees. Or I’d aim at anyone who dares fall asleep in the office. Or I’d make it so anyone who says a certain word or phrase gets ping ponged. What I wouldn’t do is simply aim it at someone’s office and have it fire away relentlessly but at low velocities, which quickly devolves the prank to an annoying and awkward event. Unfortunately I’m not a nerd. At the moment I don’t even have an office to go to.

2009 has definitely been a bad year for the… uh, head pirates. Pirates-in-chief? Anyway, Judge Stephen Wilson of the US District Court, Central District of California has ruled in favor of Columbia Pictures’ “motion for summary judgment on liability as to inducing infringement” against Gary Fung, owner of several torrent sites, including the infamous IsoHunt. A summary judgment is basically a ruling that says that the decision is so obvious that there’s no sense in holding a full-blown trial for a case. I think I know now what the hands below IsoHunt’s logo represent: lawyers.

According to Ars Technica’s John Timmer, Fung was lawyered fairly easily because he made several incriminating statements on his blog, such as questioning whether copyright infringement should be considered theft, and giving instructions on how to download movies and then burn them to DVDs.
The old “Google should be sued too because you can use their search engine to find torrents” argument wasn’t worth squat in Fung’s case, because one of his sites had specifically incriminating links, like links to torrents of “Top 20 movies” as well as TV shows and “High Quality DVD Rips”. There’s no word yet on Fung’s punishment, or if IsoHunt will be taken down, but I guess with a lopsided case like this it looks like the website’s days are numbered. Or Fung could host his torrent sites somewhere else, ala Demonoid.

You got to admit, no matter what you think of Star Wars, this Millennium Falcon bed just looks awesome! It makes me want to get my own!

After Kayla Kromer’s hamburger bed, she decided to make something more vintage and retro, like a Star Wars themed-bed.

This bed has a bunch of nifty features, like LEDs that light-up like a Christmas tree and a hideaway sleeve for your keyboard. For many Star Wars geeks like me, the Millennium Falcon is one of the most important ships in the whole Star Wars universe, since the main characters spent so much time aboard it.

The only thing that I wonder about is what would a Star Destroyer bed look like? Which one would you prefer? Personally, I think that the most important ship in Star Wars was Boba Fett’s Slave 1.

You can find out more about the Millennium Falcon bed over at Kayla Kromer’s Facebook page.

When you think of a robotic vacuum cleaner, there’s a good chance that the Roomba comes to mind. That, or Rosie from the Jetsons. Well turn off those old cartoons because Asus (specifically their subsidiary AGAiT) is throwing their hat into the vacuum cleaning ring with the ECleaner.
The ECleaner looks very similar to the Roomba, but has a few tricks up its sleeve that the competition doesn’t. In addition to its vacuuming duties, it also has a 6000-hour UV light to disinfect the area that it is sweeping. If your room could use a little freshening up, it can also spread a fragrance of your choice wherever it goes. There still aren’t a lot of details currently, but we do know that they are shooting for a $150 price when the device makes its debut.
