Pet Hamster Home With Paper Shredder

There’s a few things a pet hamster needs in order to be healthy and thrive. Basic requirements as food, water, an exercise wheel and some bedding material so that the hamster is comfortable. Tom Ballhatchet has come up with a fun design that meets this last requirement.

Called the Hamster Shredder, Ballhatchet placed a paper shredder at the top of a hamster cage. Now, bedding material can’t be easier to get and is only a paper shred away and the added bonus is that you can shred confidential documents and personal bills at the same time. You do have to make sure you don’t go overboard with the shredding so as to not overwhelm your hamster.

The nice thing about this shredder is that it is a strip cut paper shredder rather then a cross cut as I suspect the resulting paper size would be more to the liking of the hamster. It’s probably also a good way to recycle paper but if you want to go green, you may want to look at a hand cranked shredder.

Dyson City DC26 Mini Vacuum Cleaner

You may remember British inventor James Dyson who we featured last year for his innovative bladeless room fan. Well, it turns out he is back with a new and rather “small” invention in the form of a mini vacuum cleaner.

Called the Dyson City DC26, this palm sized vacuum is the size of a standard sized A4 sheet of paper and weighs less then 8lbs, 7.7 lbs to be exact. The Dyson vacuum which is one third smaller then an earlier Dyson model took five years of development time to perfect. In terms of suctioning power, it’s believed that this vacuum rivals that of the larger Dyson vacuum cleaners.

The new device has been made for small apartments and tight living spaces. The only thing holding it back may be price. Although small in size, this mini vacuum cleaner retails for $400 but no one ever said trendy was cheap. It’s already available in Japan, will be in the UK tomorrow and there is no word about availability for the US market.

My work here on Gear Diary has given me opportunity to try a wide variety of Bluetooth headsets. The biggest common denominator with all of them is the degree to which they have improved in recent years. They have, for the most part, become more comfortable, easier to pair, and they have much improved sound quality. Most recently I’ve had the opportunity to be using the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC. Plantronics describes it as “the most advanced noise canceling Bluetooth headset available”. In my experience over the last week and a half I can’t argue with that statement. It’s comfortable, easy-to-use, and offers superb sound quality.

Gameboy gets a steampunk makeover

steampunk_gameboy

If you were ever considering attempting to steampunk something, this would be a great one to start on.  As far as steampunking goes this one is actually affordable and a bit more simple than it initially appears.  Some mods go above and beyond anything the average person could ever pull off, but this one might not be so bad to attempt on an old Gameboy that’s still alive and kicking.

The total project took the creator only the better part of a week to pull off.  Of course they don’t say how many hours they put into this on a daily basis, so it might end up taking you a little more than a week if you can’t dedicate a lot of daily time.  Despite all of the fancy gears it still uses all of the normal buttons, they just happen to be spray painted as well as the rest of the body.  Then extra gears were added in to give it that steampunk look.  They also threw in a complete pro-sound audio mod as well as putting in an orange LED light.  For those of you not up to the last two portions of the mod, you could just stick to making your Gameboy look pretty.

CrunchGear is, as you know, the internet’s primary nexus for trade secrets, corporation-breaking revelations, and the latest salacious home videos of tech CEOs (yes, Jen-Hsun Hwang, we have that one). Our power to elevate or crush giants in the industry is kept in check only by our unerring discretion — and by a set of laws, carved into amber slabs and venerated constantly in a hidden shrine deep beneath Mountain View.

But now and then our vast intelligence network brings in news of such inestimable importance that we must share it with our readers, no matter what empires it may topple. Apple’s event on the 27th is whipping the internet into a foaming frenzy, but I think you’ll agree that the rumors so far have been pretty tame. 3G? Front-facing camera? Aluminum casing? You people underestimate Apple’s dedication to bucking expectations. We’ve heard things that will curl your toes, and now, after much deliberation (and fortification of the shrine against the agents of Apple) we’ve decided to share some — not all — of these mind-blowing rumor-nuggets.

For instance, did you know that the Apple Tablet will not be constructed from aluminum, but from ostrich ivory?

Our sources, who are in a position close to the company (to be precise, in its air ducts), have confirmed this. And what’s more:

  • No battery; tablet is powered by an arc reactor (design: Tony Stark)
  • Antimicrobial gel secreted from home button
  • Touchscreen is actually on the back of the tablet; included mirror allows for easy operation (hot pants device)
  • Touchscreen touches you back
  • Motherboard actually contains a piece of the All-Spark
  • Tablet’s edge is keen enough to cut between worlds
  • Free Slap Chop with every Tablet purchase (limited time offer)
  • Revolutionary real-time Wozifying of adult content means your porn will be 100% more grizzly
  • Tablet is in fact two tablets (anti-tablet not guaranteed tangible)
  • OS is a heavily modified, touch-enabled version of NeXTSTEP
  • Tablet is afraid it can’t let you do that, Dave
  • For media playback, users will have a choice between: iTunes,
  • Tablet is so abhorrent to nature that the universe is sending bugs and build problems back in time to prevent its ever being released.
  • Tablet doubles as Telescreen. The black-turtlenecked face gazed down from every commanding corner. There was one on the house-front immediately opposite. THINK DIFFERENT, the caption said, while the dark eyes looked deep into the user’s own. Down at street level another tablet, cracked at one corner, flapped fitfully in the wind, alternately covering and uncovering the single word SOSUMI. (removed at request of Minifruit)
  • Tablet is actually just an iPhone from World 4 of SMB3
  • Tablet is about to die. Needs food badly
  • Tablet sparkles when exposed to sunlight (but doesn’t like it)
  • Tablets are the true source of the Spice
  • Tablet is the Kwisatz Haderach (unconfirmed)

All of this is told to you, reader, in strictest confidence. Tell no one.

And of course we’ll be liveblogging the event. We’ll be sure let you know first thing about the Slap Chop.

After news that the rumoured Apple tablet could be venturing into the e-book reader market, Amazon seems to be making some aggressive moves to beat off the speculated Apple tablet with a stick by introducing the KDK (Kindle Development Kit), which will enable developers to create apps for the device.

So what type of apps will run on the Amazon Kindle? Well, it is suggested that we will probably see more ‘educational like’ apps, such as interactive books, travel guides, RSS Readers and may even include newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Ok, so you won’t get an extensive apps catalogue like you do on Apple apps store, however the similarity to the Apple apps model lies with Amazon’s proposed plan to include a 70:30 split. At the moment, Amazon keep a large part of their selling price of Kindle e-books, however this will change with the Amazon’s KDK, in which the 70% is expected to go to the developer.

So, do we see this drastic change of events from Amazon as a natural progression for their product or is this because Amazon are re-empting the arrival of the rumoured Apple Tablet? We personally think that there is a market for both. If the rumours are true about the Apple Tablet then we could see Apple looking to appeal to a more younger target audience who will want an all round device which offers everything, and for the Amazon Kindle, given the relatively low price, it will appeal to an older, book buying audience which will want simplicity and ease of functionality all in one. So everyone’s a winner!

What do you think? Do you think that there is room for both devices on the market or is this just the start of the Kindle-Tablet war? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think?

mit-food-printerYou know what you are looking at? Is it a dozen eggs that were laid by chickens of the future? No, but it is the food of the future.

Allow me to elaborate. This is the Cornucopia, a food preparation machine that is developed by Marcelo Coelho and Amit Zoran, two designers at MIT.

Think of the Cornucopia as an early stage of the food synthesizer from Star Trek. Remember that machine that would give you any food that you wanted? Well, this is a 3D food printer.

Essentially, what you see in those strangely-shaped capsules are flavors. By mixing them together, you get “the creation of flavors and textures that would be completely unimaginable through other cooking techniques”.

So, if you want to eat some lasagna, just mix two parts green, with three parts orange, and four parts red. I honestly don’t know if you can bring these combination together as a liquid or a solid.

Maybe the end result is that goop stuff that you see Neo and the others eating in The Matrix. As I recall, it tasted like “runny eggs” or “a bowl of snot”. I can’t imagine that the Cornucopia would be a cornucopia of good tastes. But this is MIT developing this, so who knows how it might taste.

I could see this USB Cherry Flash Drive being used as a promotional item for Bing. Although for some reason Microsoft doesn’t seem to be pushing the clear bing cherry/Bing search connection like they could be. Here’s a suggested slogan: “Bing: our search is cherry”. I’m not really sure if this is actually a bing cherry or not but it does hold 4GB of information for $17. That’s cherry.

Ion Twin Video Camera

The Ion Twin Video Camera includes two video camera lenses and two mics, one set on the front and the other set on the rear of the device. When recording video, both lenses/mics are active, capturing video footage independently of the other set.. With two separate video feeds complete with both audio and video, you can select which feed is the master and which is the “slave”.

In the final footage, you can designate the master feed as full size and the slave as a picture in picture. Alternatively, you can create a split screen with both video streams taking half the display.

There are a few situations when such a camera may be of value. For one, if you are in human resources and do a lot of new hire interviews, such a video camera could be employed to record both the interviewer and the interviewees reaction to various questions and scenarios.

On a more personal level, the Ion Twin video camera could also be used to capture situations and the videographers emotions to those situations. Imagine the reactions you could capture as you take a ride down the worlds fastest rollercoaster.

The Ion Twin Video camera will be rolling out later this year at which time pricing should be announced as well.

This is just a friendly heads up for all the gamers in the audience. Good Old Games, a video game download service (think Steam, but less intrusive) created by the people who developed The Witcher, has a sale this weekend on games developed by Cyan, Inc. Oh, shiny~!

Most notably, that includes Myst and Riven. That means the games cost only $5.99 each. If you’re never heard of these, let alone played them, please hand in your gamer card. Devin will collect them on your way out. Thank you.

windowrefrigerator01I believe there is some sort of made-up word for when you go to get a snack from the refrigerator, and you can’t find anything. However, you still go back to it, as if something will materialize.

Of course, you realize that it costs precious energy and money to stand in front of an open refrigerator door. So why not make it transparent?

This conceptional refrigerator by designer Yoon jung Kim and Jong rok Lee has some special glass in it that is normally opaque. However, if you run a current through it, it will turn transparent.

I’m not at all certain if this will work, as I have never seen glass like that before. I’m not doubting that this could work, but if we have glass that can go from transparent to opaque, then we really need to use it on more than just refrigerators.

In addition to that glass trick, this Window Fridge has another outstanding and unique feature: sections. That’s right, this refrigerator doesn’t just have one or two doors, but many. So if you want to categorize your foods, and sort them by the five compartment doors, then you can.

Well, there is no word when this fridge is going to be actually made. Perhaps the designers need to perfect this glass going transparent or opaque thing.

iheart

It’s just before February and grocery stores are stocking up on heart-shaped boxes of chocolates.  Well for those of you that enjoy your heart-shaped gadgets instead of chocolates, here’s one more.  Despite that on the outside this looks like nothing more than a sweetly made jewelry box, it’s actually an iPod dock to play your music out loud with.

The Jewelry Box Speaker may not have space for any jewelry, but it’ll make sure to keep your favorite tunes cranked.  It actually comes from a Japanese company, Marubeni Infotec.  The dock will work with 4th gen iPods, as well as the iPod Mini, Nano, Classic, Touch and the iPhone 3G/3GS.  The speakers are 2W by 2ch.  It has heart-shaped buttons to keep control of your iPod and even a mirror on the top to check your makeup with.  It will be released at the end of next month within Japan for $110.

USB Shortwave Radio

usb thanko shortwaveradio1 500x439 USB Shortwave Radio
The USB powered shortwave radio is not really all that crazy as a gadget itself, but what is crazy about it is the fact that it plugs into a computer- the very thing that could conceivably wipe out shortwave radio. Shortwave radio operates on certain bands and frequencies that enable anyone- even amateurs, to broadcast anything with a worldwide reach for no cost beyond the initial cost of equipment. Which, if you think about it, is pretty much exactly what the internet can be used for- broadcasting worldwide (of note is that shortwave is still MUCH cheaper and requires no infrastructure, so it’s future in lesser developed and accessible areas is brighter).

This radio will play both shortwave and AM/FM radio and you can even record anything you hear to .mp3 or .wav via software to your computer. The shortwave radio picks up signals in the 3,000 – 20,000KHz frequencies. It costs $79 and is made by Thanko.

Another day, another study of the potential market for cars with cords. This one is from IHS Global Insight, which says plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles will comprise nearly 20 percent of the global market by 2030.

There’s no doubt the cars will be here. Most of the major automakers are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the development of plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, and at least two of them — the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf — could be on the road in some areas by year’s end. The question is how well these cars will sell. The Global Insight analysts peering into their crystal balls see an 8.6 percent market share for plug-in hybrids and a 9.9 percent share for electrics within two decades.

“The advantages of electric vehicles are numerous — the multiplicity of energy sources, reduced emissions, reduced noise, the possibility of reduced operating costs — but so too are the challenges,” said Philip Gott, director of the team that compiled the report, “Battery Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles: The Definitive Assessment of the Business Case.”

Ah, the challenges.

The Achilles’ heels of the technology are well-known: relatively limited range and the high cost of batteries. Range is only an issue for battery electric vehicles, and most on the horizon top out at 100 miles. Although that’s more than adequate for the vast majority of people, consumers still worry about getting stuck with a dead battery.

Cost is a bigger issue. Batteries are expensive, with estimates ranging from $500 to $1,250 a kilowatt-hour for lithium-ion packs. It adds up quickly considering the Volt plug-in hybrid has a 16-kilowatt-hour pack and the Leaf EV has a 24-kilowatt-hour pack. Neither company has said what their cars will cost, but word is GM wants to keep the Volt under $40,000 and Nissan is shooting for something between $26,000 and $34,000.

Volvo plans to have a test fleet of C30 Electrics on the road next year.

Because batteries remain so pricey, a recent report by Boston Consulting Group concludes, electric vehicles will remain expensive and a small fraction of the market for the foreseeable future. But automakers and most EV advocates expect battery costs to come down sharply as the technology advances and the cars catch on. Automakers point to the consumer electronics industry when they say battery costs could fall to as little as $250 a kilowatt-hour.

The feds are betting heavily on the technology as well. The Obama administration has set aside $2.4 billion to spur development of next-generation batteries and electric vehicles, and it is loaning money to companies like Tesla Motors, Fisker Automotive and Nissan to develop EVs. The Department of Energy gave General Motors $106 million in grants to refurbish an old factory to produce batteries for the Volt. And let’s not forget the $7,500 federal tax credit for EVs.

Still, the consulting firm PTRM says battery costs will have to fall 50 percent before the total cost of owning an EV approaches that of a conventional automobile.

The analysts at IHS Global insight say there are other issues that could hinder the acceptance of EVs and plug-in hybrids. They include consumers’ questions about operating costs and safety, and questions about whether the nation’s electrical grid can handle the influx of vehicles.

Mark Duvall, director Electric Power Research Institute, has said 10 million electric vehicles would need less than 1 percent of the juice generated in the United States. Each of those cars would draw about 700 watts. “Three plasma TVs, in one year, use about as much power as a Ford Escape plug-in hybrid,” he said.

Still, the grid may need improvements at the local level — new transformers, for example, or overhauled substations — to handle the influx. Duvall argues cars with cords require a near-term investment but yield long-term benefits. They include a more efficient generation system with greater integration of renewable energy sources and reduced need for new peaker plants, which run only at times of high demand.

The analysts at IHS Global insight say ensuring the grid is up to snuff will require automakers, car dealerships, municipalities and utilities to work together. But that’s already happening to some degree as automakers like Ford and General Motors forge partnerships with utilities.

Looking at the bottom line, the analysts say plug-in hybrids will comprise 8.6 percent of the global auto market by 2030 and battery electrics will comprise 9.9 percent. Those figures are more or less in line with other studies we’ve seen recently. The seers at Boston Consulting predict 26 percent of the 54.5 million cars sold in China, Japan, the United States and Western Europe in 2020 will have an electric drivetrain of some kind, but they’re including conventional hybrids like the Toyota Prius in the mix. Just 6 percent of those cars will be electrics, the firm says.

The guys at PRTM are a little more bullish when they say 10 percent of all cars sold in 2020 will be electric. That’s the same figure Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn expects, citing Nissan’s findings that 8 percent of Americans and 9 percent of Europeans are “hand-raisers” who say their next car will be electric.

As for where we’ll see all these cars, Global Insight says the electrics will be found largely in urban areas where range isn’t a big concern. Plug-in hybrids will find more homes in the suburbs, where people drive longer distances and range anxiety is a real concern.

Boogie Board Reflex LCD

boogieboardI think we all like to have some sort of blackboard or whiteboard in our place just so we can jot down ideas, and this one is a little technological.

The Boogie Board from Improv Electronics uses “Reflex LCD” technology which is a pressure sensitive, flexible plastic which, believe it or not, requires zero power to write on it, but does require power for the erase feature.

The erasing uses the power of a small watch battery, and it is good enough for 50,000 erasing cycles. My source doesn’t seem to have any information on how this thing erases, but it has to be something technical going on there. Maybe it’s like an Etch a Sketch when you shake it, but you just push a button.

Just so you know, the Boogie Board has an included stylus, but there is nothing special about the stylus. In fact, any instrument, such as a fingernail, that can exude pressure on the board is good to make a mark on the Reflex LCD board. The user can make wide or thin marks on the board, just like writing with a pencil.

If this sounds like something that you would like to have at your place, then here’s some good news: you don’t have to pay that much for it. It costs only $29.97 at the Improv Electronics site.
