LG Serie 1 Retro TV

Jan 25
Uncategorized

lg_retro_tv_crt_serie_1

Televisions aren’t usually interesting enough to turn a whole lot of heads. Sure, everyone drools over that expensive flat panel TV that’s twice the size of your current one, but they’re pretty much all black and shiny.  LG is bringing out a very retro new TV that’s definitely a breath of fresh air if you’re tired of the same old black framed televisions.

Sure, this is going back a little in the times, but sometimes it’s nice to go back to the old.  Especially since at times it feels as if anything remotely new is looking a bit generic.  This isn’t actually a TV where new technology is concealed inside of an old frame.  It’s really an old fashioned 4:3 aspect ratio cathode ray tube.  The 14-inch screen may not be new technology but at least it looks a bit newer.  Plus some people swear that old games just look better on the older televisions.  These LG Serie 1 TVs are retailing for about $216 in Korea.

bandolier Free advice: Although the traditional definition of a bandolier is that of a bullet holding apparatus, do NOT try to get through airport security with this travel bandolier if you decide to stash bullets in one of the pockets.

Even the jolliest of TSA agents would be like, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, bag check. Bag check! BAG CHECK!”

So instead of bullets, Hammacher Schlemmer suggests one or more of the following items: “camera, wallet, cell phone, hotel key, and more.” And without trying to speak on behalf of Hammacher Schlemmer, “more” probably doesn’t mean “bullets.”

The “Traveler’s Security Bandolier” costs $40 and also features “a cord conduit in one of the pockets” for running a set of headphones from your portable audio player to your noggin.

See, the problem is that they call this thing a “Security Bandolier,” which worries me because some people might “secure” themselves with guns and bullets. No good can come of this. Plus, it kind of makes you look like a wiener. So look the hell out if someone’s like, “Hey, that thing makes you look like a wiener.” And you’re like, “Oh yeah? Take it up with these bullets!”

Android users in the United States have been enjoying the on-device Amazon MP3 app since last year, but now Europe finally gets a dose of Amazon’s DRM-free music store as well.    As long as you’ve got a handset sporting the 1.5 or higher Android firmware, you can download the free application straight from Google’s Android Market.

As the world turns, the confusion surrounding BioShock 2’s DRM continues to… confuse. 2K Games said that it’s all but eliminating SecuROM for the game’s DRM regime, but that Games for Windows Live will remain. Installation limits? Gone. Well, kinda. Riot, etc.

You’ll recall that certain sections of the Internet, primarily the hardcore PC gaming community (hi, guys!), freaked out last week over 2K’s decision to include every single DRM implementation under the sun with BioShock 2. SecuROM, Games for Windows Live, and whatever Steam wants to add into the mix. The main offenses included: limited, SecuROM-imposed installations; Games for Windows Live-imposed game-save restrictions.

Basically, it was DRM multiplied by three, and for what? It’s not like the game won’t be cracked either the day of, or the day before, it’s release.

So 2K has relented, kinda. SecuROM will now only be used to verify the integrity of the game disc at launch. There will be no SecuROM-imposed installation limitations. That’s good news.

There’s bad news, though. Games for Windows Live isn’t going anywhere. The Microsoft thingamajig imposes an installation limitation of its own, currently set at 15 per account, but this limit can easily be reset with a phone call to Redmond. So it is and isn’t a limit.

Steam details still aren’t finalized.

So, to recap: SecuROM has been neutered, but Games for Windows Live is still there, and will technically limit the number of times you can install the game. I don’t want to use the phrase Pyrrhic Victory, but…

BioShock 2 is scheduled to be released on February 9. Unless you pirate it, which means you’re probably be playing it on February 5.

DYMO LabelManager 360D

Jan 25
Uncategorized

dymo2We’ve reported on DYMO’s products before, and while the LabelManager 360D may not be the LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo, at least it’s not the Rhino 101.

DYMO’s products are made for those who just have to have a label on everything, and the LabelManager 360D is ready to work. It has a QWERTY keyboard with a 40 x 70mm screen to display two lines of text.

The 360D uses DYMO D1 labels in and 6, 9, 12, 19 mm widths, and these label cartridges simply snap conveniently in place in the back. It also has a lithium-ion battery that is the same type used in cell phones and laptops, which allows you to take the 360D anywhere for wireless work. The user doesn’t have to be dependent on AA or any kind of batteries, just an occasional recharge with the included AC cord.

The user can save up to nine different labels in its save text feature, and the 360D is very good at printing exactly what has been typed in the screen. I got a chance to try it out, and it worked very well from right out of the box. The user has the option of typing in 3 fonts and 7 text styles, as well as highlighting what he or she has written with 8 box styles or underlining.

If you need one of these for your home or office, head on over to the DYMO site and find a convenient place near you to buy them. The going price for it on Amazon is about $66.24.

Nearly two years to the day after Better Place announced its first car partnership and country deployment in Israel, the green start up revealed that it has signed an agreement with a consortium of investors led by HSBC for new equity financing to the tune of $350 million. The agreement marks one of the largest clean tech investments in history, and puts the value of Better Place at $1.25 billion.

Better Place, who has been making great strides and garnering lots of press including promising 100,000 EVs by 2016, designing electric car battery swap stations and working with the state of Hawaii on implementing more EVs, says that today’s announcement about this next heavy round of funding allows Better Place to expand its geographic footprint and to expand into new markets notably in Europe and Asia.

“Today marks the end of an extensive process with the outcome being a decision by one of the world’s largest, most conservative banks, HSBC, to take the validating step of investing in a private company intent on bringing innovation to the trillion-dollar automotive and energy industries. The strong investment commitment and global relationships that HSBC, Morgan Stanley Investment Management and Lazard Asset Management bring to the table combined with the continuing confidence from our original investors enables us to scale up globally and execute against our plan,” said Shai Agassi, Better Place Founder and Chief Executive Officer.

For HSBC, which led the round with an investment of $125 million, the deal represents one of the largest financial investments of its kind for the financial institution. Kevin Adeson, HSBC Head of Global Capital Financing, will join the Better Place Board of Directors, and HSBC will own approximately 10% of the company’s shares.

“We are absolutely convinced that the paradigm change from cars with internal combustion engines to electric vehicles offers great possibilities for growth both in the auto industry as well as for utilities,” said Stuart Gulliver, HSBC executive director and head of its Global Banking and Markets business according to Reuters.

Adeson said, “We are confident that Better Place has the technical and commercial solutions to allow for the mass adoption of electric cars in the near term. The Better Place switchable battery solution, which addresses the range limitation of fixed battery electric cars, will offer the consumer an affordable and attractive alternative to current combustion engine and hybrid vehicles. We expect the Better Place model to be widely adopted across many countries and cities, particularly in those markets with policies strongly favoring electric vehicle adoption,” to Globes Online.

As someone who has been using a PDA since the HP95LX twenty years ago and Windows CE since the Pegasus days, you’d think I would be an easy sell on a Windows Mobile Phone. So did I … but it turns out that I was wrong. I had a horrible experience with the HTC Touch Pro 2 and couldn’t be rid of it soon enough, which was surprising since I loved Windows Mobile 6.1 on my Dell Axim x51v.

I had heard that Windows Mobile 6.5 makes the phone experience better, but there was no solution on Verizon (actually just came out last week!), and I wasn’t going to take the chance of getting stuck with the TP2 by mucking about with a hacked upgrade. So after I got my smartphone stuff handled I took a trip back to XDA-Developers forums to see if there was a WiMo 6.5 update available for the Axim. There was, so naturally I gave it a shot. So what do I think? Read on to see!

Bonus: the video is subtitled in both English and Spanish, so you can learn how to say “capture it” en castellano.

leisure-eyes-cover-speakers

For some reason darkness always seems to help soothe people when they’re highly stressed out.  Everyone has their ways of embracing it, be it by turning out the lights and sitting in silence or to even cover their eyes for a few minutes.  Now whether or not this eye cover is something that’ll help or annoy you further is of course a personal choice.  However, a little soft fuzzy material over your eyes and some soothing music and it could be a great way to unwind.

These eye covers attach to your head with an elastic back strap and then on the part over your eyes it uses a soft cloth.  As far as the electronics go, it has built-in nature sounds, a line-in 3.5mm jack plug and built-in speakers.  In order to keep it running it needs 2 AA batteries.  You can purchase it in grass green, aqua blue and rose pink.  To pick one up it’ll cost you $16 through Gadget Brando.

cs40pageI don’t know why iFrogz calls its headphones series Ear Pollution, because doesn’t that imply that it is harmful to your ears? This would be the one time that you don’t want to heed the toxic symbol on each ear, because the CS40 puts out some quality audio.

However, the CS40 Comfort Series is aptly named as the headphones are quite comfortable to wear. They are not only lightweight, but well-padded as well. The rubber cups and headband cradles the user’s head quite well, and can be used for hours without feeling any strain.

In addition to being comfortable, the CS40 is also convenient. If you look closely at the picture, you can see the the earpieces are on hinges. This allows the user fold up the ear cups and gives the headphones a more compact traveling size.

Too bad they didn’t make cushioned headphones like this back in the seventies! The CS 40 is made for a 3.5mm jack, and also comes with a longer card than most headphones.

If you long for the era of cushioned phones, and want to purchase one of these for yourself, head on over to the iFrogz site and order it for about $39.99 in a blue, white, black, pink, or red color.

ebook reader kandle light

What’s in a name? A good toy with lots of gadget reviews will take you quite far, but if you have a catchy name, that is something that will stick in the minds of many and can potentially seal the deal for those sitting on the fence. This is exactly the case with Kandle Light, an ebook reader light.

Kandle ebook reader light

Today’s ebook readers that use eInk screen technology do not include any sort of backlight. This of course makes reading in low lighting conditions a bit of a challenge and in some cases, you just may be forced to turn on the bedside light if you want to keep reading.

A few crafty people have created their own do it yourself book lights and Kandle Light, which is available through Amazon is one example of this. Kandle Light comes with double pivoting arms and 2 LED lights so that you can keep reading that novel in the dark. Thanks to the WideLip grip, the device is compatible with a number of commercial book readers including the Kindle and the Sony Reader.

I wonder if it will work with the Apple Tablet that may get announced this week?

nikko_voicecontrolWhile I was at CES, I had a chance to check out Interactive Toy’s Concepts Skeet Shooter and their cool fleet of toy helicopters. They had one that could be controlled with a motion-sensing joystick, but they didn’t have a voice-controlled one like this one from Nikko.

This Nikko remote controlled helicopter can be controlled with the traditional dual stick remote, but its voice command feature knows how to respond to certain vocal commands such as “start engine”, “higher”, “lower”, “hold” and “stop”.

By the way, it also comes with a sensor that knows where the ceiling is, and won’t go any higher. This is quite a relief, because I am sure that many a toy helicopter has bit the dust due to hitting a glass (or some other type of) ceiling.

I can see why the Voice-Heli was nominated for Toy of the Year 2009 in the Netherlands. Considering that it almost won that award last year, I am surprised that it is yet to be available this year.

You can see a demonstration (sort of) on the Nikko site here. The company doesn’t seem to have any sort of price or release date for this guy, which is a real shame. It certainly is a toy that I want flying around in my household.

Optio_H90_3_COUL
So Pentax announced some new cameras today, and while they aren’t going to blow anybody’s mind, I can’t do a disaffected anti-post for every point-and-shoot announcement. And besides, it isn’t Pentax’s fault. Their cool stuff is being saved up for NAB and all that; they can’t release cool lenses and DSLRs every day.

So, without further ado, meet the cameras with “designs so unique that not one can be labeled as ‘just another silver digital camera.’” (PR people, you’ve outdone yourselves)

Update: Photography Bay has a quick hands-on if you’re interested. The gist is that they seem fine, but with 5MP shots at 6400 ISO being part of the feature set, image quality is going to be the major concern in reviews.

I-10

16456_Optio I10_PearlWhite_3QView_sm
16456_Optio I10_PearlWhite_BackView_sm
16456_Optio I10_PearlWhite_TopView_sm

Up first is the I-10. Its distinguishing figure is its retro-looking body and the inclusion of a gyro-based image stabilizer. They count “raising the ISO to 6400″ as a secondary image stabilization technique, but that’s a bit like including “decapitation” as an alternative to antibiotics. They also note that using this mode reduces effective megapixels to five. So in addition to decapitation it’s head-shrinking. Key specs:

  • 12.1 megapixels
  • 5x optical zoom
  • 2.7″ widescreen SD LCD
  • 1280×720@30 HD video

They boast that it has facial recognition technology that allows for up to 32 faces in the same frame, including dogs and cats. I’ll be giving this absurd and uncalled-for feature a separate post. $300.

H-90

16486_Optio H90_Silver_Orange_3QView_sm
16486_Optio H90_OrangeSilver_BackView_sm
16522_16501_Optio H90_BlackAndWhite_TopView_sm

Up next, the H-90. A nice-looking camera to be sure, but that’s far from making the camera a hit. The Casio FC-100 is a handsome camera and it has useful and innovative imaging modes. What does the H-90 have to say about that? Well, simultaneous tracking of 32 faces, for one. Just think of how many uses you’ll find for that. There’s a panorama function (up to 3 shots) but I don’t trust it because you can’t check the seams easily and you might end up with a weird-looking jigsaw of a shot. Better to do it with Hugin or something. All these new Pentaxes have “image recovery,” whereby you can recover the shots your girlfriend watched you delete. Okay, that’s pretty cool. Specs:

  • 12.1 megapixels
  • 5x optical zoom
  • 2.7″ SD LCD
  • 1280×720@30 HD video

Look familiar? Yes, it’s the same specs as the I-10 above. It’s not clear whether the LCD is widescreen or not, though. And no shifty-pixel image stabilization. On the other hand, they are careful to mention in the press release that the buttons are “round.” Tell me more! $180.

E-90

17911_17916_Optio E90_BlackAndWineRed_3QLeftSideView_sm
17911_17916_Optio E90_BackView_sm
17911_17916_Optio E90_BackView_sm

Last, the humble E-90. Why, I wonder, did Pentax think to call attention to the idea of the “just another silver digital camera” idea when they’re clearly releasing one of those (if not three)? Don’t buy budget cameras unless you have to, although for $100 you could probably do a lot worse than a 10.1-megapixel, 3x zoom Pentax.

Apple has just announced its Q1 2010 earnings, and as expected, they’re very good. I’ll get to the numbers in a second, but perhaps more notable are two Steve Jobs quotes in the release:

If you annualize our quarterly revenue, it’s surprising that Apple is now a $50+ billion company. The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about.”

I think we all know what that means.

Review: duaLink from CableJive

If you’re anything like me, chances are you juggle a few Apple devices around.  Personally I use an iPhone, iPod Touch and an iPod Classic.  Each device uses Apple’s dock connector on the bottom, to which I insert a charge/sync cable when it comes time to either hook the device to iTunes or add some additional power to the battery.

I’ve got one Apple charge and sync cable hooked up to my iMac which means I can charge or sync one of my three devices at any one time.

At least that used to be the case…….

Thanks to the new DuaLink cable from CableJive I can now charge and sync two of my Apple devices at once.
