Is Facebook Developing Its Own Webmail?

With Facebook’s popularity rising out of control, it’s getting easier and easier to agree with its CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s statement that it’s not meant to be a simple website. It’s out to be THE best representation of your identity on the Internet. It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, to hear rumors about Facebook developing its own webmail.

Codenamed “Titan” (pretty detailed for a rumor, don’t you think?), this new project is the buzz in social media this week. If the rumors are to be believed, Facebook users can use their vanity URL addresses as their e-mail login name, as well as access their mail via Outlook and Thunderbird.

Should be fun, but it’s not the first time we’ve seen a website try to incorporate every online activity of a user into one location. Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Google have all tried this before with varying degrees of success. But when you hear the word “Facebook,” you get a feeling that there’s something different about this effort. There is also an opportunity for a real financial windfall in implementing an email system for it’s 350 million users which could be monetized with advertisements similar to what is seen with Gmail.

So will Facebook be able to offer a better one-stop shop for everything Internet-related? The race is on.
