With ‘blockbuster’ video games such as Grand Theft Auto IV having a production budget of $100 Million back in 2008, and the average game now costing $20 – 30 Million to make, publishers have been scrambling to find ways to keep profits rolling in. They were able to raise game prices for the PS3 and XBOX360 to $60 from $50, but that only somewhat mitigates the issue. The latest idea – EA Games “Project 10 Dollars”. Read on for more details.

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
And how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
How many touchscreen all-in-ones will they announce
before they see there is no demand?
The answer, my friend, is I don’t know
I really have no freaking idea
Actually, I don’t know if people are buying these. At only $650 they’d probably fly off the shelves at Wal-Mart, but I still don’t really believe in the usability of these things. Do you really want to spend all day leaning forward and poking at your screen?
StorE TV, the next-generation of media centre , another product recently posted by Toshiba. The little black box will come in various storage sizes, sit under your telly and play all the media you want whether it be movies, music or pictures.
Currently in pre-production, Toshiba outed a first draft if you will of the StorE TV and boy does it look interesting. It will be available in 3 storage sizes, starting at 1TB, 1.5TB and then 2TB. With built in Wi-Fi it can stream media wirelessly to your TV via it’s HDMI out, from a networked PC and other UPnP devices. HD videos, mp3s, jpegs. You name it it’ll show it. Also you can plug in USB sticks, external hard drives even an external DVD drive. It also sports a card reader for image or camcorder playback.
The software running it is still in development stage and therefore doesn’t give the full potential that may be offered by the StorE TV. Suggestions of “internet services” amongst other things could well be on the way so we’ll keep an eye out if things progress and it still looks like a nifty gadget in the future towards release which Toshiba is hoping for the Autumn time of this year.

I have a Fujitsu Scansnap S500M that I use on an almost daily basis. The highspeed scanner rips through the job of scanning pages and pages of documents better than any scanner I have ever used. The quality of the scans, and the simplicity of using it, combine to make it as perfect a scanner as I could imagine. Recently it became even more useful to me after I connected it to my Evernote account. Now I scan documents and they are immediately available to me no matter where I am thanks to my favorite document and image storage service.
The only problem I have with the ScanSnap S500M is that there are times I would love to have it with me when I am the go and it is just too big to carry. That changed today with Fujitsu formally announcing the new S1300 portable scanner for PC and Mac. The new scanner is full-featured, scans up to 8 double-sided pages per minute, yet is small enough to carry on the go. Better still, it is USB-powered for even more mobility.
The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 is available now at an MSRP of $295.
The full release follows.

My wife loves to watch The Biggest Loser, but I really can’t stand it. I suppose that I should cheer these obese people while they lose weight, but like most reality shows, The Biggest Loser has so much unnecessary drama.
The Biggest Loser also does a lot of very obvious product placement. On one episode, one of the trainers walks up to the contestants and talks about how Extra Sugar Free gum can curb their appetite. I didn’t see the episode where they showed the Ultraslide Slide Board, but it is a product worth giving a spotlight to.
You can watch the video of it in action after the jump, and you an see how the user has to make sideways speed-skating movements. This is good for “deceleration, rotation with a lateral push and energy system development for golf”.
In short, this Ultraslide exercises some muscles that may or may not be getting some good use in your exercise routine. That, or for training to be the next Eric Heiden. Who’s Eric Heiden? The man who set four Olympic records and one world record at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, resulting in 5 gold medals for the United States. I can understand why you might have forgotten that name, as it did happen 30 years ago.
My source doesn’t have a price on this particular item, but I heard that you can customize the Ultraslide with the logo of your favorite sports team.

It took them a while to face the reality of losing the HD format war but eventually Toshiba buckled and decided to make a foray into the Blu-Ray market. Now we have it’s second blu-ray player on the cards the BDX2100KB, a respectable player on the market with a respectable price tag to boot.
As said it’s respectable but not the best blu-ray player on the market. It’s BD Live compatible but without a Wi-Fi connection you’ll just have to make do with the hard reality of wires. As per it does the full 1080p video output at 24fps and does the usual DVD upscaling. Put all this with Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio which you can output at 7.1. One great feature it does have is MKV support via a USB port which will also play DivX.
On sale in May for £129.99 this will appeal to those who just want a Blu-Ray player a little better than the lowest entries but not “all that”

Hot on the heels of GOG.com’s recent deal with Activision to sell DRM-free classic games, a handful of additional Sierra titles are now available alongside Gabriel Knight.
This week, you’ve got the psycho-erotic thriller Phantasmagoria for $10 or a three-pack of Space Quest games – 4, 5, and 6 – also for $10.
That’s pretty much a must-buy for Space Quest fans. I can’t speak to Phantasmagoria as I think I played it for about five minutes when it was part of some Sierra collection CD and then said, “Whelp! Back to King’s Quest III.”
Here’s the Space Quest trailer if you’re on the fence for some reason.

Every now and then something takes place in the tech world that makes you stop for a moment and regain perspective. You suddenly understand the power of technology, the goodwill of people, and the ways in which the two can combine to make a significant difference.
That was the experience I had a few moments ago.

Solid state drive (SSD) technology may not have taken the consumer electronics market by storm like some of the other devices and products released but research divisions at Toshiba and Keio University which is located in Tokyo are looking to change this.
According to information released, it appears that researchers have developed technologies to make much smaller SSD drives, some 90% smaller as well as much more energy efficient, reducing energy needs by about 70%. Along with these two benefits, the new SSDs are based on radio communication which has the added advantage of dropping development costs which in turn will further reduce costs when the new technology enters the marketplace.
So far, Tadahiro Kuroda from Keio University as well as others involved with the project believe the process will reduce the dimensions of a 1TB SSD down to the size of a small postage stamp. Additionally, the device contains one controller chip, a 128 NAND flash memory chip and supports data transfer speeds up to 2Gbps.
The first units will roll out no earlier then 2012 and by then, development processes are likely to improve further which could see the units ship with even better specifications including even faster data transfer speeds. There is no estimate on how much the SSD chips will likely retail for.

So your friend is an Apple head. He’s got the Mac Pro, the MacBook, the Air, the iPhone; he’s got Apple sheets, an Apple tattoo, he eats an apple every day — right, he’s got it all.
…or does he?
His collection will not be complete until he converts every normal device and everyday object into an Apple one. It’ll take a while, but it’ll be worth it, and this Apple lamp is a good start. Made from the dome of a dismembered iMac G4, it emits the kind of glow every Apple fan craves.
Unfortunately they’re sold out at the moment, but I bet you could make one yourself if you swing by a used Apple shop and made a bid on a busted iMac.

Despite that this looks more like an antidote that you keep around should you get bitten by a zombie, this is actually an air sanitizer. This quiet little sanitizer will kill off all of those germs that make it into your home. Which is a huge bonus if you have school age kids that tend to get the entire family sick every single time the flu goes around at their school.
This will kill 99.9% of flu viruses. The powerful fan circulates the sanitized air back into the room. Giving you cleaner air to breathe. You could either use this at home or even use it in your office if you’re worried about catching something. The Germ Guardian claims to be the first to tackle airborne germs in the home or office. You can purchase it for around $150 through Amazon.

Early this morning, RIM made a pre-release version of their upcoming Twitter for BlackBerry client available to select members of the media. Our own Leena Rao isn’t too fond of it — but that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be, right?
RIM was nice enough to slip us some extra codes, so a few of our readers are going to get to try it themselves. Want to give the new client a try a full month before anyone else gets it? Read on to find out how to win a code.
Who said Porsche wasn’t going to make a high performance hybrid? There’s nothing higher performance than racing, and racing for 24 Hours on the Nordschleife of the Nurburgring is a special proving ground indeed. Porsche plans to run the ‘ring in a 911 GT3 R Hybrid that will have its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
Although Ferdinand Porsche developed the world’s first hybrid 110 years ago, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will not be the first hybrid to race at the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring. That honor belongs to Gumpert, and we covered it here at Autopia
And although the Porsche is a hybrid, it is quite different in layout and design than the KERS system used last season in Formula 1 racing when KERS was awarded Powertrain Innovation Of The Year. The system in the Porsche was developed by Williams Hybrid Power using technology originally developed by the AT&T Williams F1 team.
Though the technology grew from the Williams’ F1 team’s work, Williams Hybrid Power now focuses on road-going applications.
“We are delighted to see our technology being adopted by one of the world’s leading engineering companies and most prestigious automotive manufacturers in one of their racing cars,” Ian Foley, managing director of Williams Hybrid Power, said in a statement. “Partnering with Porsche on this project has been a very positive experience and we are grateful to them for choosing to work with us.”
The system used in the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid is markedly different from conventional hybrid systems in its configuration and components. The front axle features two electric motors, each developing 60 kilowatts (about 80 horsepower) to complement the 480 horsepower naturally-aspirated four-liter flat six that drives the rear wheels. The car ditches the heavy battery found in a conventional hybrid in favor of an electrical flywheel power generator installed inside next to the driver
The flywheel generator, with its rotor spinning at up to 40,000 rpm while mechanically storing energy, also works as an electric motor. Whenever the driver applies the brakes the flywheel generator is charged as the two front axle electric motors reverse their role and act as generators. This additional power is available after each charge for approximately six to eight seconds and can be used when accelerating out of a bend or while overtaking. The driver can use the extra energy from the charged flywheel generator, sending up to 120 kilowatts of stored kinetic energy to the motors.
Not only does the Porsche hybrid system make more power available, but the hybrid drive can also be used to save fuel. By increasing the efficiency and the performance of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, reductions can be made to the weight of the fuel tank or the car can make less frequent pit stops, for example.
After its roll out in Geneva, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be tested in long-distance races at the 24 Hours on the Nordschleife of Nurburgring.
Porsche says that “The focus is not on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning the race, but rather spearheading technology as a ‘racing lab.’ The intent is to provide hands-on know-how for the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going sports cars.”
Fair enough, but we’re sure they’ll take a win if they can.
UPDATED 8:20 p.m. to include Williams Hybrid Power’s role in the car. Hat-tip to the guys at Brits On Pole for alerting us.

Macworld Expo 2010 is currently going on and, well, we don’t have anyone on the show floor. It didn’t really make sense to send a crew to cover the conference now that Apple isn’t headlining the event. The whole thing is likely just an iPod/iPhone/iPad case orgy anyway. I kid, but so far I haven’t seen one interesting press release from the event. Anyway, TUAW is there and captured all the fun in this 56 second time lapse video using an iPhone 3GS and the iTimeLapse app.
Here’s a crazy idea for those of you with a sense of the absurd. How’d you like to spend about $800 on a handmade plaster lamp, only to crack it open with a pick axe as soon as you take it out of the box?

That’s exactly the value proposition you’ll get if you pick up artist Jordi Canudas’ Less Lamp. You see, this pendant lighting fixture looks like a solid black hanging egg when you first receive it, letting exactly none of the light out into your room. But thanks to the included pick, you can chip your way through the delicate exterior eggshell and let the light shine out to your own liking.

As a matter of fact, you can start small, cracking out a few tiny pinholes to let the light out. But when you get bored with that, get the pick out again, and really get to work. A tap here and a pick there, et voila – a bright wash of light emerges from the bottom of your once perfect – now cracked – egg.

It’s not enough to have a hot shower, no, it’s time to take things up a notch. No, instead you need your own personal light show to go along with your off key shower singing. It’d be like your own personal spotlight, making you feel all important. Even if the rest of your household gets a serious headache every single time you take a shower.
This fancy shower head even comes with a remote so that you can change the coloring from outside the shower. Despite that the remote was created to go with a shower head that will pour out water, they don’t actually specify if it’s waterproof. There’s no need to hook the shower head up to a power source and the color changes according to the temperature. You can purchase one for $12.94 through Chinavasion.
