A recent podcast by two Microsoft employees in Australia have revealed further information about Windows Phone 7, Microsoft’s mobile operating system that was recently announced at the Mobile World Congress. There used to be a time when Windows Mobile could be accommodated in virtually any handset, but with WP7, it appears that there will be much more stringent controls over it’s distribution.
From what it appears, there will be three different chassis specifications being considered. The first hardware design was displayed at the MWC and consists of a large capacitive touchscreen display (800×480 pixel resolution) and a 1GHz processor chip which we suspect will most likely be a Qualcomm Snapdragon. It will also include an accelerometer, GPS, FM radio and a 5 megapixel digital camera. There will also be a dedicated graphics chip that will be needed to handle the onscreen activity.
Chassis two is expected to be like the first chassis, but in addition to the features described above, it will also include a slide out full QWERTY keyboard. On the other hand, chassis three, the last of the hardware designs will most likely adopt the candy bar form factor although specifics of this version are not clear at this time.
Although the new classifications will mean less variety amongst Windows based handsets, it will make the life of application developers much easier as there is less variance that needs to be accounted for and addressed.
