Good luck sorting this one out, short-sighted lawmakers. An upcoming piece of major legislation in the UK, called the Digital Economy Bill, would essentially force all public wi-fi points offline by requiring impossibly high levels of copyright protection by libraries and small businesses. The bill, which bears some similarity to the controversial DMCA here in the US, is ostensibly aimed at providing copyright holders the means of controlling their content online.

But while an ISP may detect a violation by one of its subscribers and send a nastygram to the appropriate party, it’s difficult to do that when your “subscriber” is a pub or café that offers free wi-fi to customers. If someone buys a cup of coffee, downloads a few songs, and then leaves and never returns, who is at fault? According to the Digital Economy Bill, the café.

The question critics pose to the DEB’s framers is simply: how is justice done in this situation? Clearly the café is not really at fault for providing a simple service. On the other hand, if small businesses, universities, and libraries are exempted from copyright oversight legislation, they are at risk (theoretically) of becoming pirate havens. While to the informed internet citizen, the idea of a bunch of hardcore pirates all sharing a 2Mbit DSL line, sucking down bottomless cups of coffee and seeding zero-day Blu-ray rips might seem ludicrous, I assure you: the people in charge are by no means informed internet citizens. So something’s got to give — but the industry’s ignorance is an immovable object, and while you can’t stop progress, you sure can slow it down.

Again, to the advanced internet user (under which heading falls much of this site’s readership), such backwards legislation much seem unwise — with a streak of expediency. What with the applicability (if not the fundamental legal base) of copyright being shaken by all manner of P2P, media company inertia, and skyrocketing bandwidth, it seems simply impractical to pass any sort of lasting legislation — upon shifting sands, as it were. Not that a law should be passed which fails to address obvious copyright violations, but its scope and application should be limited to where it is sure-footed, and as the landscape evolves, further steps can be taken.

Should this bill become law, backpedaling will be sure to occur in five or six years, when the flaws in such unilateral proscription produce their inevitable unsavory results. I’m not familiar with the rest of the DEB, but if it is anywhere near as short-sighted in other matters as it appears to be in this one, it’s sure to make trouble for UK citizens and lawmakers alike down the road.

Will Spain repeat its Euro 2008 success?

Greetings from lovely Seattle! I’m here on the West Coast for two reasons. One, Thursday was Adidas’ World Cup Media Day in Portland, and I was invited to check out all the hi-tech wonderment that the company has in store for this World Cup year. Needless to say, being a bit of a soccer fan, I was very excited to attend—I met the guy from Univision, Fernando Fiore, so I’m pretty sure I’ve accomplished all there is to accomplish in life. Two, then I took the choo-choo train to visit Devin. We’re at a café and everyone has their laptop out. It’s very Seattle.

But let’s talk about this Adidas thing for a minute.

The World Cup begins this June. It’s in South Africa, the first time the tournament has ever gone to Africa. (It’s in Brazil in 2014, in case you’re keeping score.) Team USA doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning the thing, so you’d be well advised to pick a “second team” to follow. Someone like Spain or Argentina or, dare I say, England.

Adidas will be all over the World Cup. The official ball of the tournament, the Jabulani, has already been talked about here, but a brief reminder is in order. I think the flashiest “spec” I can mention is that it’s the roundest ball ever created. You never really think about how much engineering goes into producing a ball like this, but man alive! As mentioned a few weeks ago, the ball is composed of eight 3D, thermally bonded panels. That last part, the thermally bonded business, is key, as that means the ball isn’t merely stitched together on a sewing machine or whatever. That would lead to leaky seams, which would lead to a water-logged ball, which would lead to Spain’s Xavi Hernandez missing a free kick right on the edge of the penalty box. We don’t need that.

But let’s move on from the ball for now. Adidas will also create the full kits (“jerseys”) of 12 countries, including hosts South Africa; traditional European powers like Germany, France, and Spain; South American tricksters Argentina (also known as Leo Messi + 10 other guys); and Team USA’s immortal sporting enemy, Mexico.

Take a look at this video, showing France’s Nicolas Anelka scoring against Ireland in a World Cup qualifier from this past November. Be sure to pay attention to his back:

You see those weird little criss-cross straps? That’s called TechFit, a type of elastic compression layer that, according to Adidas’ own numbers, helps increase a player’s vertical leap, speed, and endurance. That’s because the straps store energy that would otherwise be lost as the player moves about. The number increase—players’ power increases by 5.3 percent, vertical leap by 4 percent, sprint speed by 1.1 percent and endurance by 0.8 percent—may not seem like a lot, but when you’re dealing with top-class athletes performing in high-pressure situations, numbers like that help immensely. Imagine David Villa being able to strike a ball 5.3 percent harder than he normally would, or Michael Ballack being able to jump 4 percent higher to nick that header, or Leo Messi running 1.1 percent faster—it’s crazy.

Of course, there’s something of a trade-off, as the TechFit does fit a little more snugly than traditional kits (Adidas’ name for those are Formotion kits), and not every player would want that. And for those wondering, FIFA has given its full blessing to the TechFit technology, so no worries there. FIFA still won’t allow video replay, but what are you going to do?

I don’t know, TechFit seems to be the most “whoa, neat” thing that’ll be at the tournament, England’s performance post-John Terry notwithstanding.

The last bit I’ll draw attention to is the players’ cleats. One of the all-time stories in World Cup history is when Germany beat Hungary 3-2 in the final of the 1954 World Cup. Germany and Hungary were pretty big rivals at the time, and Germany was looking to avenge an 8-3 loss that had occurred in the first round of the tournament. Adidas’ founder, Adi Dassler, was the German team’s equipment manager, and had provided the team with new (at the time) cleats with removable studs. Did those new cleats help the German team overcome its rivals? You’d certainly have to think so.

So, this year’s cleats! One of the fancier shoes that Adidas’ players will be using is the Predator X. (I love the names for these things.) Apparently Zidane helped to design them, so you know they’re quality. Obviously it’s lightweight—that’s a given—but one thing worth mentioning is something called the Powerspine. It’s a small strip that runs down the mid-foot area that helped stabilize your feet. That helps reduce the occurrence of injuries, like a torn ACL. The last thing the World Cup needs is someone like Kaká or Frank Lampard going down to injury in an early round game.

So yeah, I’m pretty psyched for the tournament, and it’s neat to see how much science and engineering goes into creating all the various pieces of equipment used by the teams. Presumably I’ll be watching many of the games at Nevada Smiths in New York, so come on down if you’re of age.

No Adobe Flash Support On Windows Mobile 6.5

Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) Flash 10.1 is expected to be available around the middle of this year. Flash 10.1 will offer a number of new features and enhancements that will benefit mobile users significantly.

However, there is a caveat to this statement. When the new release of Adobe Flash rolls out mobile users using handsets powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 will not be able to perform the software upgrade as this release will be for new WP7 only. According to Antonio Flores, who spoke on behalf of Adobe, “We have made the tough decision to defer support for that platform until WinMo7. This is due to the fact that WinMo6.5 does not support some of the critical APIs that we need.”

This news certainly will not please many in the mobile community but to add to the misery, Android users and more specifically, Android phones without an ARM v7 Cortex chipset will also not have access to Flash 10.1 which would essentially limit usability to those that have one of either the Motorola Droid, Google Nexus One or the upcoming HTC Legend and HTC Desire.

Take a trip to the American Mid-West and chances are you’ll run across some sort of convention with a grizzly man carving random animals outside the main entrance with a chainsaw. There will likely be teenage boys onlooking, too. I can’t tell you why this man has dedicated his life to the chainsaw arts, but he’ll likely carve anything you’ll like as long as it’s a perched bald eagle or black bear.

Then there’s the guy in the video above. He must be some sort of rare hybrid woodsmen and gamer who fell in love with Big Daddy from BioShock. There likely isn’t many like him so he should be treasured and encouraged to carve more iconic video game characters. Let me suggest that his next chainsaw carving be of Gordan Freeman smashing a headcrab with his crowbar.

Google Nexus One coming to VerizonThe folks over at Neowin are stating an anonymous contact inside Google has provided them a tip that the Nexus One will be coming to Verizon on March 23rd. Google originally launched their first handset back in January from themselves only for $529, and very shortly after with T-Mobile for $179 with a 2-year contract.

When the Nexus One was launched the Google website stated it would be coming to the Verizon network sometime this spring but did not give an exact date. These rumors give it an exact date to coincide with the International CTIA wireless show in the United States, however pricing have not yet been provided.

TigerText - iPhone Application For Cheating Spouses

A new iPhone application has been developed for the would be international spy or the cheating spouse, with the latter more likely considering that this application is called TigerText rather HawkeText after Ethan Hawke from the Mission Impossible franchise.

TigerText allows mobile users to set time limits for text messages to be retained after being sent. When that time span has elapsed, the text message will automatically self destruct, wait a minute, automatically be deleted and will not be available on the mobile phone of the message sender, receiver or any intermediary server.

How does TigerText accomplish this? A person sends a secret message to his mistress using this software application. The mistress will receive notice that a text message is waiting for her but in order to read it, she must install an app. Once done, she can read the message, but she will not be able to save the message as the message was never really sent to her mobile phone. Instead, it resides on a TigerText server and after the time period that the sender set has elapsed, this message will be deleted from the server so that no one can read it. The auto-destruct can be set anywhere from one minute to five days and for the ultra security conscious, a “delete on read” setting is available which sets a timer to count down from 60 seconds with the message being gone forever one the countdown hits zero.

Jeffrey Evans is the developer of this application and he says that the name TigerText was in place before the recent Tiger Woods scandal and a decision was made to retain this name after the scandal broke. Although it does sound like this application would make its way onto the iPhones of philanderers, Evans points out the development of this application was because “People text like they talk,” “And some of the things they say, taken out of context, can come back to haunt them.”

He expects this iPhone application to be an invaluable tool for those with real privacy issues such as lawyers who may be sending time sensitive client information that should not be retained.

EU - Google Street View Refreshed Every 6 Months

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Street View, an add-on for both Google Maps and Google Earth allows Internet users to see street level detail for supported cities that have been captured by a Google car, or the Google snowmobile which was used to capture parts of Whistler Village for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Typically, Google retains these digital photographs for a period of 12 months as this time frame assists them in improving the quality and accuracy of both their mapping process and facial blurring which they perform to maintain user privacy.

Recently, the European Union (EU) sent Google written notice that the retention period needs to be reduced to 6 months as the 12 month time frame is “disproportionate.” The biggest issue that the EU has with the search engine stems from privacy concerns and data protection issues which Google had met as part of its initial requirements.

In another interesting bit of news, the EU is requesting that Google do more to make people aware of the days and times when a Google car will be in a specific neighborhood. The rationale behind this is of course to allow European citizens time to make changes to their personal property in the event that there are things that citizens don’t want filmed or captured.

Google Street View has captured some funny pictures already and when a couple of pranksters in Norway heard about the Google car coming, they were all ready in their scuba gear. I can’t help but think that providing advanced times and locations of the Google car will only lead to more crazy pictures cropping up.

Needless to say, Google has objected.

i-tab - World's First Electronic Songbook

i-tab is being billed as the first electronic songbook and the question begs to be asked, what took so long as this looks like a cool idea. i-tab is a 5-inch touchscreen display that attaches to your guitar’s headstock and serves as a digital teleprompter that chalks up chords and lyrics in perfect synchronization to your guitar playing.

The music device comes with 4GB of internal storage which should be sufficient storage space to house your tabs which you can buy online through i-tab’s online store. i-tab is expected to ship around the mid-March time frame and should make its way into music shops some time in April. At the time of launch, the online store will have roughly 5,000 tabs available for purchase with approximately 500 new tabs being added each week.

i-tab comes with integrated speakers, a stylus and data ports for USB and video out allowing for signal out to either a TV or computer screen which may be of benefit if you want to take advantage of a bigger screen while relaxing with your musical instrument or perhaps you have some karaoke singers in the house that just want to sing along. The purchase price for i-tab is $199 and 30 free tabs from popular music artists such as the Rolling Stones, U2 and Oasis will be thrown in.

Intel Pine Trail Atom N470 Processor Coming

The Intel Pine Trail Atom N470 processor was not the biggest secret in the world as its existence has been known for a while. It looks like Intel may have prematurely announced it today through their Intel PR Chip Shots in a blog post dated for Monday, March 1st. Could someone have an itchy finger over there?

Designed primarily for the netbook category of consumer electronics, the N470 processor is a single core Atom processor that has a clock speed of 1.83GHz, 512k L2 cache and supports DDR2-667. It also includes integrated graphics directly onto the CPU chip.

With the exception of the speed increase, it’s believed that the new Intel processor is similar to the earlier N450 which has a processor speed of 1.66GHz. Although the speed increase may seem negligible, the processor will be used in netbooks which are generally cheaper devices that require better power consumption but offer weaker processor power. Hence, even a subtle performance boost is of some benefit.

Intel expects that over the coming months, OEMs will begin to introduce the new processor in their netbooks, thereby offering distinguished performance for basic computing functions and Internet browsing.

Musicians will love this. The i-tab comes with a 5″ touchscreen display that will display and scroll through chords and lyrics in perfect synchronization as you are playing. Think of it as a music teleprompter for the guitar.

The device has 4GB of internal storage space, which should hold thousands of tabs that you can purchase and downloaded from the i-tab online Tab Store. There are 5,000 tabs available right now, with around 500 being added weekly.

Also includes a built-in speaker, headphone port, USB connectivity, a stylus and video out. It will arrive in April for $199.

Twitter-enabled LED table

Feb 27
Uncategorized

Looks like a Lite-Brite table, but it is so much more. Instead of the usual, controlling a device via Twitter, or just displaying and reading tweets out loud, this LED does something different. It uses the tweeting masses to generate patterns of light on the table in an artistic way.

This is accomplished by using a hashtag and a specific format for entering colors and coordinates, which first are sent to a MacBook Pro and then transmitted to the table over Bluetooth. There’s even a live USTREAM feed that lets you see the results of your tweet.

Pretty neat.

The last we heard the Nexus One was navigating its way through the FCC and Verizon was targeting a “Spring 2010″ launch. But now there’s a rumor floating around that states quite clearly that March 23, 2010 will be the launch date. Interesting…

Dell Mini 5 “Tablet Family”

Feb 27
Uncategorized

Dell Mini 5

The Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) Mini 5 made its debut at CES 2010 and in early February, the device received FCC approval. It appears that Dell has big plans ahead of them as they try and confront the upcoming launch of the Apple iPad.

Dell has confirmed that they are not looking at launching just a single tablet computer, but rather, the plan is to release a “family of tablets”, each catering to a specific niche group. In comparing what we know about the Dell tablet with the Apple tablet, both have their advantages and disadvantages over one another.

The Dell tablet computer currently includes a 5-inch screen display which is more then two inches smaller then the iPad which boasts a screen size of 9.7-inches. However, Dell has acknowledged that larger screen sizes will be available shortly.

What Dell does have on Apple is the integrated digital camera and phone features which are notably absent on the iPad, a device that ironically is being referred to as a large screen iPhone.

So far, there are no details on price point with Dell only indicating that pricing will be “competitive.” This is something that Dell should be providing soon, especially with the release date of the Apple iPad approaching quickly.

Google Nexus One On Vodafone UK In April Suspected

The android powered Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Nexus One has been available in the United States for a few months now and it appears that those in the UK may not have much longer to wait as an April launch date is being targeted by both Google and the UK based mobile telecommunication company Vodafone (LON:VOD).

The information comes by way of unnamed sources close to both companies that revealed that March was the preferred month for the UK launch of the Google phone but that the April time frame is more realistic.

It’s believed that the smartphone will only go on sale through Google’s dedicated Nexus One website and that pricing should be comparable to the Apple iPhone. Unlike Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the Nexus One has only been available online and this may account for some of it’s sluggish sales which will hopefully pick up now that new retail markets will be available shortly. Google does have a challenge on it’s hand in carving out a niche in the mobile phone market that is currently dominated by Apple’s flagship product and Microsoft’s resurgence with their new mobile operating system Windows Phone 7. However, Google did update the Nexus One in January to include multitouch web browsing, thereby putting it on an even ground with the iPhone.

Both Google and Vodafone were unable to commit on the record the April launch date, only stating that the phone would be available “in the spring”.
