Although the Apple iPhone is one of the coolest phones available, iPhone owners may have had a small glimmer of envy in their eyes as they see Palm and Android phones capable of multitasking.
An earlier report from today by the Apple Insider seems to indicate that the playing field may become level as Apple intends to roll out version 4.0 of their iPhone operating system. With the new iPhone OS, Apple owners will be delighted to hear that a “full-on solution” for multitasking will be made available. No longer will you have to close one application to use another, a criticism commonly leveled against the Apple mobile operating system.
If the information is correct, it should mean that multitasking will not only come to the iPhone and the iPod Touch, but also to the soon to be released iPad. There are still a number of unanswered questions that need to be addressed such as how Apple will manage potential security risks generated by open third party applications, resource and battery life optimization, notifications, as well as how to switch amongst applications to name just a few.
The inclusion of multitasking in Apple devices will benefit many application developers such as the music streaming service Pandora and geolocation application Foursquare.
The release date for iPhone OS 4.0 is unclear as sources indicate that multitasking support still has “quite a way to go.”
